ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The 13th-ranked Navy squash team wrapped up action at the Navy Veterans Weekend Tournament by carding 9-0 sweeps against Northwestern, Washington and Hobart in what was a busy day on the courts. The Mids, who are coming off a 26-win season a year ago, improve to 9-0 on the year as they prepare to battle seventh-ranked Dartmouth next week.
Navy easily cruised past its first two opponents of the day, Northwestern and Washington, before Hobart gave the Mids all they could handle. Although Navy walked away with a 9-0 win over the Statesmen, the Mids didn't find it an easy match. Four of the nine matches went into extra games, including two matches that were pushed to five.
"We had another successful weekend of squash and although we defeated Hobart by a 9-0 score, it was by far the hardest opponent we've faced to date," said Navy head coach Craig Dawson. "They pushed us in several of the matches and we had to come from ehind in a few of them. After having played two other matches during the day, it was a testament to our training and the focus that our players have been able to press upon this season.
"We are off to a terrific start to the season and no doubt we will be working hard this week to prepare for Dartmouth."
With a trio of wins on Saturday, senior Allan Lutz (McLean, Va.) became just the fourth player under Dawson's watch to win 80 matches. Lutz earned his 80th-career win behind an 11-5, 11-1, 11-2 victory over Washington's Robert Young. He went on to score his third win of the day by defeating Hobart's Corey Kabot, 11-3, 11-8, 11-2, and helped set the tone for the nightcap.
Rookie Hunter Beck (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) opened the day with an 11-6, 11-1, 11-3 win over Northwestern's Eitezaz Mahmood, but faced his toughest test in the finale against Hobart sophomore Daniel Pelaez. Palaez won the first two games 11-9, 11-9, but Beck fought back to win the third game, 11-7. Point by point, Beck pulled himself back in the match and evened the score at two games apiece with an 11-4 win in the fourth. He closed out the match with an 11-7 win in the fifth game.
Sophomore John Richey (West Hartford, Conn.) turned in a 3-0 mark on the day and like Beck, he found himself in a dogfight against his Hobart foe. After winning the first game, 11-8, Hobart senior Grant Palermo knotted things up with a 12-10, game-two victory. The two players traded wins over the next two matches before Richey sealed the win behind an 11-3 game five win. Now at 8-0 on the year, Richey has produced a 34-7 record in his first two seasons.
Hobart senior Carl Ranieri pushed Navy senior Tommy McNamara (New York, N.Y) to four games. McNamara, who played the No. 6 position against Hobart and Northwestern, opened up with an 11-5 win in the first game, but Ranieri evened the score behind an 11-9 win in the second game. McNamara, however, went on to claim the match victory by way of back-to-back 11-7 wins.
In the final extra-game match of the evening, senior Aidan Crofton (Laverock, Pa.) put away Hobart's Kevin Kent in a four-game decision. Crofton opened up a 2-0 advantage with identical 11-4 wins, but Kent extended the match by taking game three, 11-9. Crofton sealed the win by taking an 11-9 victory in the fourth game. Crofton, meanwhile, now owns a flawless 12-0 career record.
Junior John Tracey (Owings Mills, Md.) and sophomore Hunter Bouchard (Greenville, Del.) also put together 3-0 marks on Saturday, while Abrams and Bouchard were 5-0 for the weekend.
Navy will be back in action next Friday when they travel to Hanover, N.H. to battle perennial power Dartmouth in the first of four matches on the road next weekend. The Mids will face Tufts and Northeaster on Saturday in Boston, Mass. before closing out the weekend with a Sunday morning match against Connecticut College.
