ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy squash team opened its 2010-11 season with a 9-0 victory over Virginia at the Navy Invitational on Friday. Navy is currently ranked No. 13 in the nation and all nine players earned straight-set wins in their opener.
"We got the season off to a successful start," said 11th-year head coach Craig Dawson. "All of our players looked sharp and they all played well."
Allan Lutz (McLean, Va.) was successful in his senior season debut in the No. 1 spot, edging Patrick Martin, 11-8, 11-6, 11-7. Lutz is Navy's active leader in career wins and now has a total of 74.
Freshman Hunter Beck (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) earned his first career win with an 11-6, 11-5, 11-1 win over Joseph Breheny at No. 2.
Sophomore John Richey (West Hartford, Conn.) dominated Roy Flemmer to the tune of a 11-1, 11-1, 11-1 margin in the No. 3 slot. Classmate Billy Abrams (Wilmington, Del.) swept Nick Reed at No. 4, winning 11-0, 11-3, 11-4. Abrams was the only Navy player to hold an opponent scoreless in a game.
Sophomore Hunter Brouchard (Greenvile, Del.) breezed past Scott MacGregor, 11-1, 11-2, 11-2 in the No. 5 spot and senior and Brad Seidel (Toledo, Ohio) earn the win at No. 6. Seidel, the team captain, defeated Edmund Tse, 11-2, 11-3, 11-3.
Tommy McNamara (New York, N.Y), John Tracey (Owings Mills, Md.) and Aidan Crofton (Laverock, Pa.) all picked up wins in slots 7-9, respectively.
Navy will take on Georgetown (11:00 am) and North Carolina (2:00 pm) Saturday and will conclude the invite with a match against Vaderbilt on Sunday.
