CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- A record-setting performance at the U.S. Short Course National Meet and her qualifying for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials in a pair of events resulted in Navy's Laura Gorinski (So., Greensburg, Pa.) being selected as the Patriot League's Women's Swimmer of the Week on Monday.
Gorinski, who earned the league accolade for the fourth time this season, broke her own school record in the 100 breaststroke and set a new Navy and Patriot League standard in the 200 breaststroke at last weekend's short course (25-yard length pool) event held in Columbus, Ohio. Her time of 1:01.13 in the former event allowed her to better her own school record of 1:01.89 that she set at last year's Patriot League Championship. Gorinski followed that performance by posting a time of 2:12.40 in the latter event to improve upon her own Navy and Patriot League record of 2:13.09 that she established in November.
She has improved upon the Navy record in the 100 breaststroke a total of three times in her 15 months as a member of the swimming team and has bettered the school's 200 breaststroke standard on four occasions.
One day after the conclusion of the short course meet, the pool on the Ohio State campus proceeded to play host to the U.S. Swimming Long Course (50-meter length pool) Invitational. Gorinski posted times of 1:11.55 in the 100 breast and 2:32.20 in the 200 breast during the meet, both of which surpassed the qualifying time standards of 1:12.19 and 2:35.99, respectively, for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials.
Gorinski is the first female swimmer in Navy history to qualify for the Olympic Trials in multiple events.
Both Navy swimming and diving teams will resume their respective dual meet seasons Thursday night when the Mids compete against Army in Philadelphia.
