Final Stats
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - UNC Greensboro won a pair of close doubles matches and five straight-set singles contests to post a 6-1 victory over the Navy men's tennis team Saturday afternoon at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis.
The match was the first for the Mids in two weeks due to weather-related cancellations last weekend. The loss dropped Navy's record on the season to 2-3. The Spartans, meanwhile, bounced back from a 5-2 loss to Maryland yesterday in College Park. UNCG will make the trip home with a 3-1 record on the year.
"We fought hard today against a very good Greensboro team," said Navy head coach John Officer.
The doubles point was not decided until the third and final match was completed. After Navy's Jeremy New (Jr., Glen Allen, Va.) and Zach Nicholson (So., Bowie, Md.) won an 8-4 decision over Yaroslav Litus and Jacob Wright at No. 3 doubles, UNCG's Kyle Eddins and Timion Meijs evened the score with a 9-7 victory over Nick Birger (Jr., Belleville, Ill.) and Ramsey Lemaich (Sr., Danville, Calif.) at No. 2 doubles.
The remaining match featured Navy's Owen Bullard (Jr., Concord, N.C.) and Eddie Konrad (So., The Woodlands, Texas) taking on Arsel Kumdereli and Orcun Seyrek at the No. 1 flight. The match would be extended into a tiebreaker, which the UNCG tandem would win by the score of 7-5.
The majority of the singles matches also were closely contested. Seyrek posted a 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 victory over Bullard at No. 1 singles, Kumdereli won a 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) decision over Marcus Rebersak (So., Pittsburgh, Pa.) at No. 2 singles, and Eddins tallied a 6-3, 6-3 win over Matt Richmond (Fr., Kalamazoo, Mich.) at No. 6 singles.
Navy's point was recorded by Anderson Walls (Fr., Alpharetta, Ga.), who posted a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) victory over Wright at No. 4 singles.
"This was a really good experience for us," said Officer. "To compete against a very good team under the circumstances we have had with the recent weather is a challenge. That's not an excuse; we lost to a better team today. But to come out after having just one short practice over the last week and compete as we did is something not a lot of teams can do. We fought hard but came up short today, but this match can really help us in the long run."
Navy will be back at the Tose Family Tennis Center this coming weekend for a trio of matches. The Mids will face Penn Friday afternoon (4 p.m.) before playing host to Yale (12 p.m.) and Delaware State (5 p.m.) on Saturday.
