ANNAPOLIS, Md. - For the second match in a row, the Navy men's tennis team was edged by one of the top programs in the Ivy League and in the region. One night after dropping a 4-3 decision to Penn, the Mids lost a 5-2 contest to Yale Saturday afternoon at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis.
"It was a very tough match," said Navy head coach John Officer. "We played yet another hard-fought match against a good team."
Yale (4-3), which has appeared in the national rankings this season, picked up the available doubles point with victories over Navy (2-5) at the Nos. 1 and 3 flights.
The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead when John Huang, the 17th-ranked played in the Northeast Region, won a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Owen Bullard (Jr., Concord, N.C.) at No. 1 singles. The Mids were able to cut their deficit in half when Nicholas Gutsche (Fr., Sarasota, Fla.) rallied to post a 4-6, 7-5, 6-0 victory over Jordan Abergel at No. 6 singles. Navy then was able to knot the score at two points apiece as Marcus Rebersak (So., Pittsburgh, Pa.) won a 7-6 (3), 6-4 match over Calvin Bennett at No. 2 singles.
However, Yale closed out the match with a straight set win at No. 4 singles and three-set wins at Nos. 3 and 5 singles.
"Today was a very competitive match for us," said Officer. "We are getting better and I think by the end of the year our record will come around to reflect that."
Navy will be back on the courts later tonight when the Mids play host to Delaware State (5 p.m.).
