CLEMSON, S.C. -- Nationally-ranked Clemson remained undefeated on the season by recording a 6-1 victory over the Navy men's tennis team Saturday afternoon at the Hoke-Sloan Tennis Center in Clemson, S.C. The 56th-ranked Tigers improved to 10-0 on the year with the win while the Mids fell to 3-7 on the campaign with the loss.
The Tigers picked up the doubles point by sweeping the three matches. Clemson won at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles by identical scores of 8-4 to secure the point, then the duo of Rok Bizjak and Moritz Dettinger outlasted the Navy tandem of Owen Bullard (Jr., Concord, N.C.) and Eddie Konrad (So., The Woodlands, Texas) in a tiebreaker. The Tigers won the breaker by the score of 8-6.
Navy's lone point of the day was recorded by Zach Nicholson (So., Bowie, Md.), who rallied to win a 0-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory over Robert Pietrucho at No. 5 singles.
"Zach's play was the real bright spot on the day," said Navy head coach John Officer. "What I am most proud of Zach is that he didn't become discouraged after losing the first set. He also handled himself like a class act throughout the match."
Navy will next be in action Sunday when the Mids play host to Drexel in a 3 p.m. match at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis.
"We're at the end of the first half of our season," said Officer. "Though our record is not what we want it to be, each guy in the starting lineup has recorded wins over good teams. We do have things to hang our hat on."
