WEST POINT, N.Y. - Host Army won 14 of the 19 events contested, including nine 1-2 sweeps on its way to handing the Navy men's track team a 119-84 setback on Saturday afternoon at Shea Stadium.
Senior Mark Van Orden (Morris Plains, N.J.) delivered a career-best toss of 203'9" (62.11 meters) to win the hammer throw and junior Andrew Hanko (Montville, N.J.) ran to victory in both the 1,500-meter and 5,000-meter races to highlight Navy's efforts.
For Van Orden, a four-time Patriot League champion, the effort surpassed his previous PR of 200'5" (61.08) established last spring. It was his fourth individual victory against Army, giving him a sweep of the hammer and weight throw events this season against the Black Knights.
Hanko led a 1-2 Navy finish alongside sophomore Cody Rome (Eagle, Idaho) in the 1,500, both finishing with PR times of 3:47.89 and 3:48.51, respectively. Navy also produced the top-two 5K efforts on the day with Navy's third-year distance stalwart pacing the field in 14:31.91, followed by sophomore teammate Ken Bunnell (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) in 14:33.53. For his career, Hanko now has a team-high six individual wins against the Black Knights.
Navy also received individual victories from freshman Dean Black (Colorado Springs, Colo.) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and junior Devan Clark (Vorhees, N.J.) in a Navy sweep of the javelin throw.
Black cut exactly 18 seconds off his previous-best time in the steeplechase, taking first with an IC4A-qualifying time of 9:01.33. Clark won the javelin against Army for the second-straight spring with a season-best and IC4A toss of 202'1" (61.60 meters). Behind Clark, sophomore Chris Ricks (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) took second with a qualifying-toss of his own at 194'10" (59.38 meters).
"We let ourselves get lumped on today and we have to get that changed around," said Navy head coach Steve Cooksey. "There were nine events where they went 1-2 on us and there's just not much you can do when that happens. We will get this turned around."
Navy will travel to Baton Rouge, La. to compete at the LSU Alumni Gold Track & Field Invitational next Saturday, April 17.
