Navy Swimming Duo Earns Academic Honor

July 12, 2010

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy swimmers Tara Chapmon (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Laura Gorinski (Greensburg, Pa.) were recently recognized for their efforts in the classroom and in the pool by being named as Scholar All-Americans from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America.

To garner the accolade, swimmers must have attained at least a `B' cut time for the 2010 NCAA Championship Meet along with either a 3.50 grade-point average during either semester of the 2009-10 academic year or a 3.50 cumulative GPA for their academic career.

Chapmon, who was a member of Navy's graduating Class of 2010, posted a 3.94 GPA during her final semester on The Yard. In the pool, she competed at the NCAA Championship in the 100, 200 and 500 freestyle events while also attaining a `B' cut time in the 1650 free. She was previously selected as the winner of the Vice Adm. Lawrence Sword for Women, which is presented to that woman of the graduating class who is considered by the Association's Athletic Council to have personally excelled in women's athletics during her years of varsity competition.

Gorinski accrued a 3.59 GPA during the fall term and a 3.50 GPA during the spring semester. The rising sophomore posted `B' cut times this year in the 200 individual medley and both breaststroke events.
