Patriot League Release
CENTER VALLEY, Pa -- Freshman forward Ashlynn Soellner has been named the Patriot League Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week and junior defender Katelyn George has been tabbed as the league's top defender, the Patriot League announced today.
Soellner and George, who combined on two game-winning goals last weekend, helped Navy post a 2-0-0 record. George assisted on Soellner's 85th-minute goal in a 1-0 win over Mount St. Mary's on Friday in Annapolis and the duo teamed up again on Soellner's sudden-victory goal in a 1-0 overtime decision at George Mason on Sunday.
The two goals for Soellner were the first of her young career. In being named the top offensive player of the week, Soellner follows teammate Christine Calderon, who was named the season's inaugural top offensive player last week. Soellner and Calderon are tied for the team lead in goals this season, with two apiece.
George was also a key member of a defensive unit that posted two shutouts on the week. In addition, the Mids currently have a 281-minute scoreless streak that spans three games.
This is George's third career weekly award from the Patriot League. George was named the defensive player of the week on Sept. 8, 2009 and was the rookie of the week on Oct. 16, 2008.
Navy (2-1-1) will play at Texas on Friday evening and will also play at Texas State on Sunday.
