ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Five different players scored as Navy (3-4-1) blanked visiting Manhattan (1-3-1), 5-0, on the final day of the Navy Invitational on Sunday. The Mids jumped out a 4-0 first-half lead and used a trio of goalkeepers to combine for Navy's third shutout of the season.
"We're happy to get a good win with a lot of goals today," head coach Carin Gabarra said. "I'm very happy that five different players scored, because we've been talking about having a game where a lot of people make the difference."
Navy opened the scoring in the 15th minute when senior Carissa Youker's corner kick was mishandled by Manhattan's goalkeeper. The ball bounced off the keeper, off the near post and then into the net. Youker has now scored in three of the last four games.
The Mids went up 2-0 five minutes later, when sophomore Brittany Fruin served a ball to the middle of the box, where senior Anastasia Abid headed the ball into the right side of the net.
Navy struck again in the 31st minute off another corner kick. Junior Kate Herren took the corner and served it through the box to the far side of the net where freshman Ashlynn Soellner headed the ball in for her third tally of the year.
Freshman Sam Newhaller would put Navy up 4-0 just before halftime with her first career goal. Herren served a ball into the box, which was then one-touched by freshman KD Woolard through to Newhaller. Newhaller took an off-balance shot that bended around an incoming defender and buried it.
Hannah Legler played the first 45 minutes in goal for Navy and earned the win in net. The sophomore made two saves and has now had a hand in all three of Navy's shutouts this season.
Freshman Paloma Perez scored the final tally for Navy in the 79th minute. Manhattan tried a pass-back to their goalkeeper, but the speedy newcomer ran in and stole the ball and made a move on the keeper to earn her first career goal.
Freshman Alexes Lopez-Shaw and senior Traci Willemse combined in net in the second half for Navy. It was Lopez-Shaw's third combined shutout.
Shots were even in the game at 11-11 and Navy held an 11-6 advantage in corner kicks, scoring off two.
Youker, sophomore defender Kelsey Learned and sophomore midfielder Fallon Puppolo were named to the Navy Invitational All-Tournament team for the Mids.
The Mids will take the momentum from the win into a pair of road games next weekend, at VMI and James Madison.
"Things haven't bounced our way lately and I told the team today that we need to work hard and make sure that they do," Gabarra said. "Things do not happen without the hard work, so hopefully, it will pay off."
