Annapolis, Md. - The Navy men's track and field squad (5-1) won nine events, posted 14 IC4A-qualifying efforts and topped a six-school with 214 team points on Saturday afternoon in the Wesley A. Brown Field House. The Mids outlasted UNC-Wilmington (145), Maryland-Eastern Shore (74.67), Lehigh (67), Mount St. Mary's (25) and American (23.3).
"We were hitting on all event areas and getting our guys into the finals and score," said head coach Stephen Cooksey. "In order for you to have a championship team, you have to be able to that, and that's what I felt like we did today."
Junior Dominic Della Pelle paced a very fast 1,000-meter run, winning the race with a personal record time of 2:25.78. Junior Jeremy Haney was third at 2:27.63 and the top-five runners were all under the IC4A standard.
Junior Cody Rome won the mile run with an IC4A time of 4:06.72 and senior Andrew Hanko placed second (4:08.72). Junior Michael Sheehan was fifth in the race at 4:14.70 (IC4A).
Four Mids qualified for the IC4A Championships in the 3,000-meter run, led by junior Kenneth Bunnell's winning time of 8:22.48. Freshman Clay Elward placed third (8:25.83), senior Matthew De Villers was fourth (8:26.80) and Alexander Merrall was fifth (8:27.20).
The Mids took solid points in the 400-meter dash with junior Alexander Jackson (50.08), sophomore Kolton Kempel (50.19) and senior Lorenzo Armijo (50.98) placing 2-3-4.
Sophomore Mitch Simmonds qualified for the IC4As in the 60-meter hurdles with first-place time and personal record of 8.23. In his first race of the season, freshman Wynton El placed third in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.17.
Senior captain David Ash earned an IC4A-qualifying mark with his time of 1:54.59 en route to winning the 800-meter run.
Junior Joshua Houston continued his strong season in the high jump by winning the event with a clear of 6'8-1/4" (2.04m). Freshman Ryan Kochert won the pole vault with a height of 14'9" (4.50m).
Senior Nicholas Porter claimed the weight throw (54'1/2", 16.47 meters) and senior Patrick Norwood placed second in the event (51'11", 15.82 meters). Junior Chris Boniwell placed second in the shot put with a toss of 50'8" (15.44m) and Jeffrey Steinmetz was fourth (48'6-1/4", 14.79 meters).
The Mids placed second behind UNC-Wilmington in both of the relays. The 4x400 squad of Armijo, Fleet White, George Stevenson and Kempel produced a time of 3:23.07 and Ash, Lucas Connelly, Joshua Shaw and Matthew Evers posted an 8:04.06 in the 4x800.
Sophomore Rand Montermini won the non-scored heptathlon with a combined total of 4,473 points. Sophomore Dean Black won the non-scored 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:42.83 (IC4A).
Navy will return to action next Saturday when the team plays host to Rhode Island, Rutgers and Temple.
