BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Navy senior
Justin Mumford has been selected as the Patriot League Men's Outdoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the league announced on Wednesday. Mumford is the seventh different Navy men's track and field athlete to earn the honor and the first since Thomas Johnstone in 2021.
Mumford is one of eight Midshipmen to earn All-Academic Team honors this season. Navy placed a league-best seven athletes — the most in program history — on the men's team and one on the women's team.
To be eligible for the team, student-athletes must attain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average and be a starter or key contributor in their sport. Freshmen and students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible. Each team consists of 21 honorees.
Mumford, an aerospace engineering major, earned all-academic team distinction during the indoor and outdoor seasons for the second time in his career (2024, 2026). He is one of the top-ranked students in the Class of 2026, currently 66th in the Academic Order of Merit. Mumford has received 15 academic honors at the Naval Academy, including three appearances on the Dean's List, while boasting a 3.95 GPA.
Mumford won a pair of championships last weekend at the Patriot League Outdoor Championships. He claimed the 10,000-meter title for the second time in his career, setting a league and facility record with a time of 29:26.91. Mumford then went on to win the 5,000-meter race in 14:33.15.
Additionally, Mumford was the 2025 cross country Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the year.
Joining Mumford on the men's all-academic team are
Logan Flament,
Brian Schloeder,
Jamison Scott,
Robert Skaggs,
Sheldon Ulmer and
Cooper Wakley.
Flament collected the second all-academic team accolade of his career (one indoor and one outdoor). The electrical engineering major has claimed six USNA academic honors and posted a 3.99 GPA. Flament helped Navy complete a podium sweep in the 10,000 meters at the league championships, placing third in 29:32.00.
Schloeder, a quantitative economics major, received his second all-academic team award. He owns a 3.80 GPA and has earned six academic honors from the USNA, including two selections to the Dean's List. Schloeder won the pole vault at the league's outdoor championships, setting a meet record with a height of 5.33 meters (15-5.75) and breaking an eight-year-old mark.
Scott obtained his second Patriot League All-Academic Team accolade. He boasts a 3.88 GPA as a robotics and control engineering major and has earned eight academic honors, including two Dean's List selections. Scott had a career-best performance in the decathlon at the league championships, finishing second with 7,244 points — the 10th-most in Navy history.
Skaggs was awarded all-academic team distinction for the first time in his career. Majoring in mathematics, he has a 3.79 GPA and has accumulated 10 academic honors and five trips to the Dean's List. Skaggs finished fourth in the decathlon at the league championships last weekend with 6,637 points.
Ulmer, a robotics and control engineering major with a 3.43 GPA, earned his third all-academic laurel. The Greensboro, N.C., native has totaled nine academic honors in six completed semesters at the Academy. At the league championships last weekend, Ulmer won the high jump for the second-consecutive season, clearing 2.07 meters (6-9.5).
Wakley received the second all-academic honor of his career. The nuclear engineering major boasts a 3.65 GPA and has earned eight academic honors, including two Dean's List selections. Wakley competed in three events at the league championships, medaling in two. He helped the 4x400-meter relay team win gold (3:10.44), finished second in the pole vault (4.97 meters / 16-3.5) and placed fifth in the 400-meter hurdles (52.17).
Gracie Emerick is Navy's lone representative on the women's side. A chemistry major, she has a 3.78 GPA and has totaled 10 academic honors through three years at the Naval Academy. At the Patriot League Championship, Emerick finished second in the pole vault with a height of 3.98 meters (13-0.75), the third-best mark in school history.
