ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy's hopes of pulling an upset over the 11th-ranked Williams squash program were dashed Sunday morning with the Ephs scoring a 7-2 win over the 15th-ranked Midshipmen in Annapolis. With the win, Williams has now won 11 in a row against Navy.
"We gave a good effort today, but we just did not have enough to pull out the win," said Navy head coach Craig Dawson. "We received great support from the Brigade, as well as the Superintendent and Commandant which we greatly appreciated."
The Mids earned wins from the No. 1 and 4 slots with a senior and freshman providing the firepower. After dropping a tough three-game match mid-week against George Washington, senior Allan Lutz (McLean, Va.), ranked 89th nationally, regrouped and dealt 37th-ranked William Morris a stunning blow, 11-5, 11-8, 11-5 at the No. 1 slot. For Lutz, he not only earned a team-best 16th victory this season, he also moved into a three-way tie for the second-most wins by a Navy player under Dawson's direction with 89.
Newcomer Hunter Beck (Lafayette Hill, Pa.), ranked just outside of the top 100 at 112, turned in a 3-1 victory over 80th-ranked Taylor Foehl, also a freshman. Beck took the match 11-7, 11-8, 6-11, 11-9 to improve to 15-3 on the year.
There were three additional matches in which Navy looked to try and turn the tide. Sophomore Billy Abrams (Wilmington, Del.) took the opening game against 69th-ranked Will Gruner at the No. 2 position, but Gruner won the next three - 11-8, 11-4, 11-7 - to win the match. Fellow sophomore David Koenig (Cincinnati, Ohio) also began his match against Ryan Eagan with an 11-8, win, but Eagan was able to fight back to score the 3-1 win at No. 8. Finally, after Williams' Jared Zuckerman jumped out to a 2-0 advantage, Navy junior Clayton Young (River Forest, Ill.) extended the match by taking game three, 11-6. Zuckerman, however, closed out the match with an 11-6 win in game four.
The Midshipmen will be back in action next weekend, playing four matches in three days. Navy opens the weekend with a Friday evening (5:00 pm) match at Columbia, followed by matches against MIT (9:00 am) and Yale (4:00 pm) on Saturday and Colby (9:00 am) on Sunday. The latter three matches will be played in New Haven, Conn. as a part of the Yale Round Robin.
