Annapolis, Md. - With Lt. Cmdr. Wesley A. Brown, USN (ret.) in attendance, the Navy men's track and field program claimed five events and posted 14 IC4A-qualifying marks at the non-team scored Wesley Brown Invitational at the Wesley A. Brown Field House on Saturday afternoon.
The invitational and field house are named in honor of Lt. Cmdr. Brown, who became the first African American midshipman to graduate from the Naval Academy in 1949.
The Mids entered the weekend ranked No. 2 in the Mid-Atlantic Region and competed well against a field that included North Carolina, which is nationally-ranked at No. 21.
"We did a pretty good job as a team overall," said head coach Stephen Cooksey. "The middle distance and distance was very good today and they continue to be strong. That's going to be a big plus for us going into the Army meet (Feb. 5) and beyond that into the Patriot League Championships (Feb. 18-20). There are some very good points for us to walk away with in those areas."
Junior Cody Rome topped a very fast field in the 3,000-meter Run with a time of 8:12.91, besting his previous personal record by 10 seconds. Rome won a good battle with North Carolina's Jake Hurysz, who placed second (8:13.67). Rome's time in the 3,000-meter was the fastest indoor time run by a Midshipman in over 10 years.
Sophomore John Satterwhite placed third in the 3K (8:19.33, PR) and junior Michael Sheehan was seventh with a time of 8:22.42. With Satterwhite and Sheehan hitting the IC4A mark in the 3,000m for the first time this season, Navy now has team-best nine different runners who are eligible in the 3K at the March championships.
Senior Andrew Hanko established a new personal record of 4:06.08 to win the mile run. Hanko trailed Isaac Presson of North Carolina going into the final turn before making his move and edging Presson by .30 seconds.
Junior Dominic Della Pelle placed third in the mile with a time of 4:08.84 and junior Jeremy Haney increased his PR by six seconds to place fourth at 4:08.97. The top nine runners in the mile were under the IC4A standard.
Freshman Daniel Park registered his first win of the season in the triple jump with a leap of 45'1/2" (13.72m). Sophomore Miles Snelgrove used a long jump of 21'10-1/4" (6.66m) en route to a second place finish.
After three runner-up performances in the 800-meter Run this season, junior Matthew Evers won the event with an IC4A-mark of 1:53.54 and senior David Ash placed fifth (1:54.26).
Sophomore Dean Black hit a new personal record in the 5,000 (14:36.98) to finish second in the 5,000-meter Run. Senior Robert Alvarado (14:42.69) placed fifth and senior Matthew De Villers took sixth (14:45.77). All three Navy runners in the 5,000m were under the IC4A standard.
Freshman Brett Bogaard hit his first IC4A mark of his career and also the first IC4A mark for Navy in the 200-meter Dash this season with a second-place finish of 22.22. Bogaard got under the IC4A mark by a slim .02 seconds.
Senior Nicholas Porter led Navy's performance in the weight throw with a toss of 54'10" (16.71m) and junior Christopher Ricks, making his season debut after recovering from an injury, placed third fourth in the event with a throw of 54'6" (16.61m). Senior Patrick Norwood finished fifth at 51'8-1/4" (15.75m).
Senior Jeffrey Steinmetz (48'4", 14.73m) placed third in the shot put and junior Chris Boniwell was fourth (47'9-3/4", 14.57m).
Junior Nathan Woodason set a season-best of 15'3" (4.65m) in the pole vault to place third in the event and freshman Ryan Kochert finished fourth at the same height but with more attempts.
Sophomore Mitch Simmonds posted an 8.27 to place second in the 60-meter Hurdles. Junior Alexander Jackson was fourth in the 400-meter Dash and sophomore Kolton Kempel was fifth (50.19).
The Distance Medley Relay team of freshman Chris Burns, senior Lorenzo Armijo, freshman Weston Kennedy and freshman Alexander Merrall posted Navy's first IC4A time in the event (10:13.94) to win by a four-second margin.
Navy also received an IC4A-qualifying time from its 4x400-meter relay team en route to a second place finish and a new season-best of 3:18.25. The 4x400 team was comprised of Kempel, Ash, Jackson and Evers.
