ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The 16th-ranked Navy squash team (23-5) won the five-team tournament dubbed the Patriot League Schools Squash Championship this weekend by earning 9-0 victories over four schools who are traditional members of the Patriot League (the Patriot League does not sponsor squash as a varsity sport). After earning wins over Colgate and Bucknell on Saturday, the Mids closed out the tournament with victories against Lafayette and Lehigh on Sunday.
Navy's lineup was the same the entire weekend with all nine members posting 4-0 records for the weekend. A day after become Navy's all-time winningest player under Craig Dawson's direction, senior Allan Lutz (McLean, Va.) pushed his career wins mark closer to 100 win a 3-0 victory over Lafayette's No. 1 player Chip Culp, followed by an 11-4, 11-5, 11-3 win over Esteban Caro of Lehigh. Lutz, who stands 23-4 this season, owns a 96-30 career mark.
Sophomore Billy Abrams (Wilmington, Del.) inched closer to the 20-win mark with a pair of wins on Sunday at the No. 2 slot. After dispatching Lafayette's Carter Rufe in three games, Lehigh's Jared Ciejek stole game three and forced Abrams into a fourth game. Abrams sealed the win in the fourth with an 11-9 victory. At 19-7, he has won three more matches than in his rookie season.
Navy's No. 3 and 4 players, Hunter Beck (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) and John Richey (West Hartford, Conn.), were tough on the court on Sunday. Beck surrendered just two points en route to a three-game win over Will Giametti of Lafayette, while Lehigh's Marcelo Caro managed just five points. Meanwhile, Richie nearly held Lehigh's CJ Horning without a point in an 11-1, 11-0, 11-0 win, before taking an 11-1, 11-1, 11-3 win against Lehigh's Nigel Corea.
Junior Clayton Young (River Forest, Ill.) won his opening match against Lafayette by default, but got back on the court against Lehigh where he faced local product Foster Rankin. Young scored an 11-2, 11-5, 11-1 win to push his season record to 11-2, just one win shy of tying his personal best.
Senior Aidan Crofton (Laverock, Pa.), meanwhile, reached the 20-win mark for the first time in his career thanks to a 3-0 win over Lafayette's Holden Ranz, followed by an 11-7, 11-7, 11-4 victory over Lehigh's Andrew Moss.
The Midshipmen will receive a much-needed break in the action next weekend before playing host to eighth-ranked Franklin & Marshall at Halsey Field House on Feb. 12 at 3:00 pm.
