SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The 15th-ranked Navy squash team opened the 2011 calendar year with a convincing 9-0 victory over 20th-ranked Stanford Saturday afternoon in San Francisco, Calif. The Mids traveled west mid-week where they battled several club teams and met the Cardinal in preparation for the second half of their season.
"Our week of two-a-days really paid dividends this weekend as we play a very strong match against Stanford," said Navy head coach Craig Dawson. "It was a great trip to San Francisco where he had great support from our alumni and had the opportunity to get in some great matches."
Still without team captain Brad Seidel (Toledo, Ohio) in the lineup after suffering a stress fracture in his foot in the early season, Navy was dealt another blow when John Tracey (Owings Mills, Md.) sustained an ankle injury and was forced to watch from the sidelines. Junior Clayton Young (River Forest, Ill.), however, made the transition into the lineup without a hiccup, scoring an 11-6, 11-4, 11-3 victory over Keebuhm Park at the No. 9 slot.
Navy senior Allan Lutz (McLean, Va.) got the Mids off to a fine start, claiming a 3-1 win over Stanford's Chris Baldock at the No. 1 position. Lutz, who is ranked 89th nationally, won the first game, 11-9, but Baldock battled back and knotted the match with an 11-5 win in the second. Lutz, however, would not be denied as he claimed 11-9 and 11-6 wins in the third and fourth games, respectively, to take the win. The Navy senior leads the team this season with a 15-2 record and is 88-28 over the last four seasons.
While Dawson was forced to change the bottom half of the lineup due to Tracey's injury, he also made a slight change at the upper half of the lineup, as well. Sophomore Billy Abrams (Wilmington, Del.) moved into the No. 2 slot where he picked up an 11-5, 11-8, 11-4 win over Stanford's Tyler Strand. Meanwhile, freshman Hunter Beck (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) settled into the No. 4 position where he scored an 11-4, 11-4, 11-5 win over Derek Rowley.
Sophomore John Richey (West Hartford, Conn.), Navy's winningest player over the last two seasons along with sophomore Hunter Bouchard (Greenvile, Del.), earned a tough 3-1 win over Teddy Bowers. After taking a 2-0 lead, Bowers pushed the match to a fourth game by earning an 11-7 win in the third. Richey managed to take the match win by way of a narrow 11-9 decision in the fourth. Bouchard, meanwhile, turned in a 3-0 win over Mark Wieland at the No. 3 position.
The Mids return to action on Wednesday when they make the short trip to the nation's capital where they will face No. 16 George Washington beginning at 5:00 pm. Navy will then play host to 11th-ranked Williams next Saturday at 10:00 am in Annapolis.
