CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- No. 25-ranked Virginia scored a pair of goals in the game's first 32 minutes, then held off the Navy men's soccer team in the second half to hand the Midshipmen a 2-0 setback in front of 1,018 fans at Virginia's Klockner Stadium.
The loss was Navy's second in a row and drops the Mids to 4-6-3 overall, while the Cavaliers, fresh off a 2-1 win over previously No. 2-ranked Maryland, improve to 8-4-0 overall.
Virginia took an early 1-0 lead in the game's fifth minute when Hunter Jumper sent a cross into the box where Brian Ownby headed the ball into the corner for a 1-0 advantage.
The Cavaliers pushed the lead to 2-0 in the 32nd minute when Ryan Zinkham scored on a 12-yard shot off a cross from Kyler Sullivan.
Virginia outshot the Midshipmen, 10-1, in the first half, but Navy controlled the second half.
Navy's best scoring chance came early in the second half when Patrick Sopko (So. / Gloucester, Va.) forced Virginia keeper Spencer LaCivita to make a diving save, resulting in a corner kick where Martin Sanchez (So. / Salisbury, Md.) sent a shot just over the crossbar.
Navy would go on to outshoot the Cavaliers, 8-2, in the second half, but were plagued by seven offsides calls during the entire contest.
"Clearly, it was a game of two halves. I think we were able to regroup and make some tactical adjustments in the second half. I'm proud of the way we battled and took the game over in the second half," said Navy head coach Dave Brandt. "We were a little unlucky not to get one in the second half as we had quite a few pretty good looks."
Virginia outshot the Midshipmen, 12-9, for the entire game and drew five corner kicks to Navy's three. The Midshipmen were whistled for 12 fouls to Virginia's seven.
Aaron Dupere (So. / Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) stopped three shots while allowing two goals in the first half, before Max Renaldo (Jr. / Tampa, Fla.) played the second half in goal, registering no saves against zero goals allowed.
Navy will travel to Lehigh on Saturday for a key Patriot League contest, beginning at 1:00 pm in Bethlehem, Pa.
