CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The Navy men's tennis team saw its fall season come to an end this weekend as three members of the program took part in the ITA Atlantic Regional Championship in Charlottesville, Va.
The tournament began for the Mids Thursday when Blake Daniel (Overland Park, Kan.) and Calvin Mark (Fr., Union City, Calif.) competed in the qualifying draw for singles. Both players won their respective opening round matches, with Mark eventually moving on into the main draw thanks to a second-round win. He posted a 6-2, 6-2 first-round win over Delaware's Ryan Kent before defeating Georgetown's Andrew Dottino, 6-0, 7-5, in the second round. Meanwhile, Daniel recorded a 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 win over Temple's Mansur Gishkaev and suffered a 6-4, 6-1 loss to Virginia Tech's Jon Pine.
"Calvin played terrific in qualifying for the main draw," said Navy head coach John Officer. "Blake played well in winning his first round match. I think he ran out of steam against Pine. Blake had a tough three-set match and Pine, as the No, 1 seed in the qualifying draw, didn't have to play a first-round match."
Mark continued his winning ways in the main draw as he dispatched Radford's Joe Mills in straight sets (6-4, 7-6) in the opening round of 128 players. Mark would lose a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 decision to Maryland's Maros Horny, the tournament's No. 4 seed, in the second round.
"Calvin did a great job, especially as a freshman, to get into a third set against Maryland's No. 1 player, a guy who has played a fair amount of professional tournaments and has a professional ranking," said Officer.
Marcus Rebersak (Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) received a first-round bye in the main singles draw, then dropped a 6-2, 6-1 contest to Virginia Tech's Marko Lovrinovic in the second round.
In doubles, the Navy tandem of Mark and Rebersak won an 8-5 match over Alexis Huegas and Jamie Vazquez Catoira from Virginia Tech in the first round before losing in the second round by the score of 8-3 to the Temple team of Filip Rams and Kacper Rams.
"Calvin and Marcus played well in their first-round match," said Officer. "VCU is a top-40 program in the country, so it was a good win for them."
