ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's heavyweight, men's lightweight and women's rowing teams will all open their fall seasons on Saturday at the Navy Day Regatta on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pa.
"The Navy Day Regatta has historically been a very good regatta for us," said Navy heavyweight head coach Rick Clothier. "We enjoy the event and it has evolved from being a small race to a regional regatta."
The Navy Day Regatta began in 1986 as a way to promote and support the U.S. Navy's birthday (Oct. 13, 1775) among the Navy and Marine Corps.
The men's heavyweight team had one of its best ever Navy Day Regattas last season as it had boats place either first or second in four of five events. The Mids' varsity eight boat took second in the open/collegiate race last season, while its two entries in the second varsity eight took first and second place.
"The guys are excited to race," said Clothier. "We will get to see some of the schools we'll compete against later on in the year and it gives us a chance to get off our course for the first time this year."
The Navy lights also had a successful Navy Day Regatta last season, highlighted by its three entries in the varsity eight open/collegiate race taking first, third and fourth place.
Last season's Navy Day Regatta served as the season opener for the women's team as the varsity eight placed third in the open/collegiate eight race.
"With this being the first race of the year, it is always a good benchmark to see where we are in our training," said Navy women's head coach Mike Hughes. "Our top contenders should be Penn and Drexel, although you never know who may be coming from behind in a head race. It will be great to find out where we are at this point in the fall."
