Men's Tennis Wins Seven Matches

Oct. 8, 2011

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Calvin Mark (Fr., Union City, Calif.) and Chris Kenney (So., Westlake Village, Calif.) both won a pair of matches on the day as the Navy men's tennis team won seven of nine matches against the combined team of George Washington and Morgan State Saturday morning at the USNA Tennis Courts.

Mark began the day by teaming up with Peter McDonald (Fr., Chapel Hill, N.C.) to win an 8-5 decision over Morgan State's Eric Ward and Duk Young-Park at No. 2 doubles. He then went on to defeat Ward by the scores of 6-2 and 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

"Calvin is playing on fire right now," said Navy head coach John Officer. "He was our player of the day out there."

Kenney and Heyward Drayton (So., Valley Forge, Pa.) first recorded an 8-2 victory over Morgan State's Aaron Benjamin and Dmitry Chekhlatyy at No. 3 doubles before tallying a 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) win over Morgan State's Jannick Tash at No. 8 singles.

Navy swept the three contested doubles matches when Blake Daniel (Fr., Overland Park, Kan.) and Nicholas Gutsche (Jr., Sarasota, Fla.) posted an 8-1 win over Morgan State's team of Tash and Duwane Thomas at the No. 4 flight.

"We played well in the doubles matches," said Officer. "The middle of the doubles matches saw us do some things that let them get closer than they needed to be, but we were able to close things out."

The remaining Navy victories saw Marcus Rebersak (Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) record a 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 (10-8) win over George Washington's Viktor Svensson and Matt Richmond (Jr., Kalamazoo, Mich.) win a 6-0, 6-1 decision over Thomas at No. 7 singles.

Morgan State's two wins on the day came at Nos. 4 and 5 singles. At No. 4, Young-Park posted a 6-4, 6-2 win over Tyler Burnett (Fr., Fayetteville, Ga.), while Chekhlatyy won a 7-6 (7-1), 6-7 (3-7), 1-0 (10-8) match over Daniel at No. 5.

"In some of our matches, individuals did not perform the way they are capable of," said Officer. "They came out flat and uninspired. We need to get that corrected for Sunday. The players need to know themselves and compete to that in every match."

Navy will close the Navy Gold Invitational by facing Georgetown Sunday at 2 p.m.
