Navy Rowing With Successful Results at Navy Day Regatta

Oct. 8, 2011

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The Navy rowing teams won seven races on Saturday in its first action of the season at the Navy Day Regatta in Philadelphia.

Navy won the men's heavyweight collegiate 4 final, the men's lightweight / heavyweight collegiate frosh/novice 8+ final, the men's heavyweight collegiate JV 8+ final, the men's open/collegiate lightweight 8+ final, the men's heavyweight collegiate frosh/novice 4+ final, the men's heavyweight open/collegiate 8+ final and the women's open/collegiate 8+ final.

The women's team won the open/collegiate 8+ final with a clocking of 14:23.81. The boat featured two freshman and gave coach Mike Hughes a strong performance.

"Obviously its a great way to open the season with wins against very good teams. There were 20 boats in the finals, and we came out and we were going for it from the start," said Hughes. "We went all out in perfect conditions and you could not ask for a better rowing day. We had a really good last quarter of the race, and showed a lot of promise. It's a very encouraging result with such a young team, and we are right on schedule with where we want to be."

The men's heavyweight team had a successful day as well, winning five races. The Mids won the collegiate 4 final in 13:09.93, the frosh/novice 8+ final (12:18.86), the collegiate frosh/novice 4+ final (13:51.24), the collegiate JV 8+ final (12:10.63) and the open/collegiate 8+ final (12:10.27).

"It was a very nice day overall for Navy rowing. All three teams performed well and it was just a wonderful day on the water," said Navy heavyweight rowing coach Rick Clothier. "I am very pleased with all our athletes. It's early on but I thought we all showed a lot of promise."

The men's lightweight team also had success, placing first and second in the 8+ final with times of 12:39.20 and 12:39.24. The team also placed third in the lightweight 4+ final.
