ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The NCAA Zone `A' Diving Championship hosted this weekend by Navy concluded Sunday with Ben Freedman (Fr., Kennewick, Wash.) placing 10th for the Mids in the platform diving competition.
Freedman tallied 514.35 points over the 11 rounds of diving. Winning the platform event was Virginia Tech's Logan Shinholser with 793.50 points.
Shinholser, who also won the three-meter event this weekend in Lejeune Hall, was one of four men and five women to advance to the respective NCAA Championship. One of those NCAA qualifiers was Navy's Olaf Olson (Sr., Bainbridge Island, Wash.) thanks to his third-place showing on the three meter.
"This is a great accomplishment for Olaf," said Navy head coach Joe Suriano. "He has been so close to qualifying earlier in his career, for him to be able to cap his career by competing at the national championship is wonderful. Olaf dove very well this weekend and I am excited for him to finally make it to the NCAA Championship.
"This also was a good weekend for those divers who will return to the team next year. Ben had a good showing today, Hayden Jones (Fr., Spring, Texas) had one of if not the highest scoring single dives during the entire meet, and we saw some good things out of Wil Mayo (Fr., The Woodlands, Texas)."
The NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championship will be held March 24-26 in Minneapolis, Minn. Joining Olson from the Navy program at the event will be swimmers Mark Meyer (Jr., Bethesda, Md.) and Justin Vagts (So., Crofton, Md.).
