Princeton, N.J. - Senior Andrew Hanko won the 5,000m individual title at the IC4A Championship to highlight Navy's efforts after the first two days of competition at Princeton's Weaver Stadium. Navy has 18 points at the conclusion of Saturday's action and competition will continue through Sunday at the IC4As.
"We've been doing pretty good out here," head coach Stephen Cooksey said. "Our guys have been running some very good times and we were very, very competitive. Hanko ran a great race in the 5K and Cody Rome was right with him and also ran a great race. Zachary Duncavage also had a really good showing in the discus (7th place), which is really solid for a plebe for the level of competition."
Hanko placed first in the 5,000m run with a time of 14:00.11, finishing a second better than Brown's Dan Lowry (14:01.41). The time was the fourth-fastest run in school history and Hanko earned 10 team points for the victory and also IC4A All-East honors. Hanko ran a 13:56.93 earlier this season.
Rome was 10th in the 5,000m (14:10.89) and junior Kenneth Bunnell was 13th (14:21.92, season best). Rome was right with Hanko for most of the race until the last lap when some runners were able to move past him.
Sophomore Dean Black also earned IC4A All-East honors with a third place showing in the 3,000m Steeplechase. Black clocked a personal record time of 8:58.35. Black earned Navy six team points for his performance in the steeple.
Freshman Zachary Duncavage placed seventh in the discus throw with a mark of 163-0. Duncavage earned IC4A All-East honors with his performance. Junior Chris Boniwell was 11th in the discus with a mark of 160-7.
Navy's 4x800m team of Lucas Connelly, Weston Kennedy, David Ash and George Stevenson qualified for Sunday's final with a season-best time of 7:30.46. Navy will have the sixth-best qualifying time of the nine teams in the final.
Navy also had 4x100m (42.70, 21st) and 4x400m (3:16.13, 16th) relay teams in competition, but neither advanced to Sunday's finals.
Junior Dominic Della Pelle also advanced to Sunday's finals in the 1,500m run. Della Pelle ran a 3:55.07 in the prelims on Saturday.
Senior Nicholas Porter was Navy's top finisher in the hammer throw with an 18th place showing (177-2). Junior Christopher Ricks was 20th (175-9) and senior Patrick Norwood was 22nd (171-2).
Sophomore Mitch Simmonds ran a 14.72 in the 100m hurdles to place 15th and junior Alexander Jackson ran a 22.33 in the 200m prelims (22nd place).
In addition to Della Pelle (1,500m) and the 4x800m relay team, Navy will have junior Chris Boniwell competing in the shot put and junior Joshua Houston in the high jump on Sunday.
