NEWARK, Del. - The Navy women's track and field team (10-1) won five events at the Delaware Invitational at the Delaware Field House on Friday evening. Navy amassed 182.5 points to place second out of seven teams in the meet. Host Delaware took the top team spot with 199 points. Navy had not competed since December 1.

"Overall it was a pretty good meet," head coach Carla Criste said. "I'm pretty excited about the way things are starting off and hopefully it will bode well for the rest of the indoor season."

Senior Jess Palacio took first place in the mile run with a time of 4:59.02 and also won the 3,000m, coming in at 10:08.67. The mile time was under the ECAC standard and Palacio has now won all three of her races this season.

"It was a great night for Jess to double in the mile and 3K," said Criste. "She set a good tone in the 3K as we went 1-2-3 with Katie Taylor and Brigid Byrne finishing behind her."

Senior Katie Taylor posted a second-place time of 10:12.22 in the 3K and junior Brigid Byrne took third (10:18.34) as Navy dominated the event.

Freshman Annie-Norah Beveridge was fourth in the mile with a time of 5:19.56 and classmate Maria Arnone was sixth (5:23.29). Beveridge also claimed second place in the 800m run with a time of 2:29.46.

Senior Mansfield Murph took first place in the 500m run with a time of 1:18.18. Murph also nearly brought Navy's 4x400m relay team to victory on her anchor leg, but Navy settled for second (4:04.60), just behind Delaware (4:04.03). Murph teamed up with junior Natasha Druggan, senior Colleen McFadden and sophomore Veronica Ffrench in the relay.

Senior Amanda Phelps surpassed the ECAC standard for the second time this season in winning the weight throw with a mark of 53-7 (16.33m). Sophomore Maressa Guynn was second with a PR of 49-81/4 (15.14m).

Sophomore Lauren Allam took first place in the shot put with a PR of 43-3¼ (13.19m) and sophomore Teronda Brown was second with a mark of 42-11¾ (13.10m).

"Our throws looked great tonight as we went 1-2-4 in the shot put and the weight throw," Criste said.

Navy took three of the top four spots in the high jump. Junior Kristin Smith cleared 5-5 (1.65m) to place second and junior Melanie Sluzewicz and Ffrench tied for third (5-3, 1.60m).

Ffrench turned in Navy's top 60m dash time of the season, clocking an 8.03 to place fourth. Smith ran an 8.09 to take sixth in the 60m.

The Mids will return to action next Saturday at the Wesley A. Brown Field House when the team hosts the Navy Open.
