CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Navy men's and women's swimming and diving teams completed competition at the three-day Nike Cup on Saturday. The men's team finished third out of six teams with a team total of 778.5, while the women placed fourth out of eight teams with a team score of 666.5. North Carolina State won both the men's and women's titles.

"Overall, I was pleased with this evening's session," said Navy men's head coach Bill Roberts. "We raced hard and I was excited about our effort. After three days of racing, I liked our effort tonight."

"We had a great three days of racing," said Navy women's coach John Morrison. "We had a good morning and then finished up with a great final session tonight. Overall it was very good racing top to bottom. We're at a great point in our season right now with the way we swam this weekend."

Laura Gorinski headlined the women's effort on Saturday evening by taking first place in the 200 breaststroke. Her time of 2:13.56 met NCAA `B' cut standards as she easily won the race by 0:04.5.

Later on, Rheanna Vaughn also posted an NCAA `B' cut time as she came within .07 of taking first place in the 200 butterfly. Vaughn clocked a 1:58.93 in the event to take second place behind Jessica Hubert of Old Dominion.

"Achieving those two standards at this point in the season is great," said Morrison.

On the men's side, Navy posted a pair of first-place finishes, beginning with Tom Duvall in the 1650 freestyle. The Navy men claimed three of the top-five places in the event as Duvall easily cruised to a first-place finish with a time of 15:21.12, which was over 0:28 ahead of second-place Bernardo Figuiredo of Old Dominion. Riley Mita clocked a 15:55.47 to take fourth and Alex Nickell a 16:01.12 to place fifth.

"Tom had a spectacular swim. He led right from the get-go," said Roberts.

In the women's 1650, Rachael Dudley took third with a time of 16:49.34, less than 0:02 behind the second-place finisher Emma Nunn of North Carolina.

The other top finish on the men's side came from Ben Bondurant in the 200 butterfly. Bondurant clocked a 1:47.51 to take first place, just .16 ahead of teammate Jonathan DeBaugh, who placed second.

In a tightly-contested women's 200 backstroke race, Kellie Darmody placed third with a time of 2:01.2 - .26 ahead of fourth-place Anna Schegoleva of Northeastern. Just 0:01.93 separated first through fourth places.

Like the 1650 free earlier in the evening, the Navy men combined to take three of the top-five spots in the 200 breaststroke. Bill Young and Sean Murphy took second and third places, respectively, as Young clocked a 2:03.04 and Murphy a 2:03.71. Luke Hoffer posted a 2:04.07 to take fifth.

Zach Ingold posted another top-five finish for the men as placed fourth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 44.67 - just .02 behind third-place Nikola Simic of East Carolina.
