ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- With warm weather and good wind throughout the start of the spring season, something was bound to give and it did this weekend for the Navy intercollegiate sailing team. The warm weather remained, but the winds did not, as teams struggled to get racing in for the Truxtun Umsted Regatta and the St. Mary's Women's Intersectional.

The Trux is the annual centerpiece of Navy's home regatta schedule, where it hosts the largest collegiate dinghy event in the country with 20 teams in four divisions. The size and importance of the event always draws the top competition and the best of the best were on hand again this year to see what they have heading into the spring championships. Unfortunately, the wind never topped five knots on either day of competition and remained under the sailable minimum of three knots for the majority of the weekend. The race committee got the most out of the conditions to complete six races per division. Navy ended up 10th overall in the 20-team event. Michael Grove and Caroline Lockett finished 13th in A Division, while Jason Carminati and Julie Digiovanni were ninth in B, Philip Youngberg came in seventh in C, and Marissa Lihan was 10th in D.

At the St. Mary's Women's Regatta, a similarly strong fleet waited for wind as well a little south of Annapolis. With slightly more favorable conditions, they were able to get in nine races per division, and Navy ended up eighth overall in the 18-team field. Mary Hall and Layne Morrison posted a strong fifth-place finish in A division while Killian Corbishley and Erica Leinmiller were 13th in B.
