ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Senior Becky Kaplan scored the game's first two goals to lead No. 13 Maryland (1-0) to a 3-0 win over Navy (0-1) on Friday at Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. It was the 2012 season opener for both teams.

The game saw a one hour and 46 minute lightning delay that began with just three minutes remaining in the first half.

"I thought we did well in the first half and we created chances and followed our game plan," Navy head coach Carin Gabarra said. "But in the second half we just didn't attack the same way and we didn't do the work off the ball and that changed things for us."

Kaplan put Maryland on the board in the 15th minute after Kristen Schmidbauer made a long cross from the left end line, which Kaplan kneed into the net from five yards out.

Navy sophomore Rachel Hunter nearly evened the game in the 27th minute, ripping a free shot on target from 25 yards out, but Maryland goalkeeper Rachelle Beanlands made a diving save to stop.

Hunter's opportunity came during a two-minute stretch where Navy registered three shots and a corner kick, applying solid pressure to Maryland's defense.

Kaplan notched her second of the day in the 58th minute, after the lightning delay, when she was sent through Navy's backline on a nice pass and deked Navy junior goalkeeper Elizabeth Hoerner to find herself in front of an empty net.

Navy sophomore forward Lily Kramer had a good look at the goal in the 76th minute, but Beanlands made one of her four saves of the day to stop the threat.

The Terrapins scored their third goal of the game in the 78th minute when Alex Reed found the back of the net.

Maryland out shot Navy, 12-7, and held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. Hoerner made three saves for Navy in her second career start.

The game was played in front of a large crowd of 907, the 10th-largest women's soccer crowd in the history of Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.

Navy will return to action on Sunday at 1:00 PM when the team hosts UMBC. UMBC and Patriot League member Lafayette tied, 0-0, on Friday night.
