ANNAPOLIS, Md. - In its first dual meet of the season, the Navy gymnastics team fell to William & Mary, 412.85-398.45, on Sunday afternoon at Macdonough Hall. The Tribe topped Navy in five of six events in what was the first of three dual meets between the teams this season. Navy junior Chris Junghans posted the meet-high all-around score of 80.55.
"We struggled in our training this week and made a lot of mistakes today, many of which we can eliminate" said Navy head coach Dr. Sho Fukushima. "Today was certainly a growing pain for us, but we had some bright spots, too."
Navy started the meet with the floor exercise where it posted a team total of 67.35. Junghans helped Navy eclipse its score in the event from last weekend as he posted a 14.05. The Mids followed with a score of 62.75 in the pommel horse. Freshman Eric Morrison led Navy with a score of 13.7.
William & Mary's first event was the pommel horse and it scored a 68.05. The Tribe followed with a 70.65 in the floor exercise with the help of three individuals that scored a 14.3 or better as they took a 138.7-130.1 lead after two events.
In the next rotation, the Midshipmen started with the rings where they registered a 68.7, besting William & Mary's score of 67.85 in the event. Sophomore Josh Steves (13.9), Junghans (13.8), sophomore Thomas Goodell (13.75) and freshman Josh Gong (13.75) posted the team's top-four scores in the discipline.
The Tribe posted a score of 70.5 in the vault, just eclipsing the Mids' 69.9. William & Mary's Daniel Potemski led all individuals in the event with a 14.55, while Navy sophomore Eric Viscardi followed with a 14.4 to lead Navy.
William & Mary carried an 8.45 point lead into the final two events and then extended the advantage in the parallel bars, outdueling Navy, 69.9-64.9. The Tribe's Landon Funiciello led all gymnasts in the event with a 14.45.
In the meet's final event, the high bar, William & Mary edged Navy by 0.95 points. Junghans (13.25) and sophomore Trevor Carson (13.2) were Navy's high scorers in the event, helping the Mids a total of 64.85.
Junghans rounded out his all-around score of 80.55 with a 13.25 in the pommel horse, 13.5 on the vault and 12.7 on the parallel bars.
Navy will travel to Army next weekend for the annual West Point Open. The team and all-around competition will take place on Friday at 7 p.m., with the individual finals following on Saturday at 7 p.m.
"Hopefully we can continue to improve this week and be better next weekend," said Fukushima.
