Navy Intercollegiate Sailing Report

Oct. 14, 2013

ANNAPOLIS, Md - This weekend the Navy intercollegiate sailing team hosted the largest collegiate women's regatta of the year, the Navy Fall Women's Regatta. Eighteen of the top teams from across the country were on hand sailing in three divisions out in Annapolis harbor.

Soggy Northeasterly conditions helped to keep away some of the pleasure boat traffic that is usually prevalent during the boat show and the shifting, variable winds provided for exciting sailing and kept the competitors on their toes. PRO Gavin O'Hare ('92) did a terrific job running quality races with great efficiency while Davin Clinnin and Dick Morin provided swift justice in the protest room at the end of racing.

Navy ended up third overall, with Mary Hall and Layne Morrison coming in second in the A Division, Marissa Lihan and Megan Hough second in B Division and Hannah Hughes was 12th in C.

The Carl Van Duyne MAISA Men's Singlehended Championship was originally scheduled to take place at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy this weekend, but unfortunately, Kings Point was unable to support the event due to the partial government shutdown. However, Navy was able to step up to the plate and provide quality racing out in the bay for the Lasers. Navy set the course beyond Greenbury Point and found winds in the mid to upper teens and 2-3 foot waves to provide a true test for these men who were looking to advance to the ICSA Men's Singlehanded Nationals. After a solid showing throughout the weekend, Phil Youngberg finished fifth overall, barely missing out on the Nationals. Markus Edegran also competed, finishing fourteenth.

At the Moody Trophy in Rhode Island, James Allsopp ('11) took the team on the road to sail against a deep field of seventeen teams. In yet another puffy and shifty event, Navy finished seventh overall, with Michael Grove, Emma Ferris and Alex Asuncion coming in ninth in A division while Michael Popp, Glenn McKenna and Chelsea Smith were sixth in B.

Navy is slated to compete in the Captain Hurst Bowl, Central Fall #2 and the Navy Fall Intersectional Regattas next weekend.
