All-Academy Championships Ahead for Gymnastics on Saturday

Feb. 15, 2013

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -

The Navy gymnastics team will travel to Atlanta, Ga., to compete in the annual All-Academy Championships on Saturday. No. 15 Navy will join No. 13 Army and 14th-ranked Air Force in competing at the Georgia State Sports Arena at 6 p.m. on Saturday.

The All-Academy Championships

Navy fell just short of reclaiming the All-Academy Championship title last year as Air Force edged the Mids by 2.15 points to take its second consecutive event win. Navy last won the title in 2008 and '09 and there was no meet in 2010. Army's last All-Academy Championships title came in 2007.

Navy's top performers at last year's All-Academy Championships were Andrew Faulk and Chris Junghans, who placed first and second, respectively, in the all-around.

A Closer Look at the Teams

The three service academies rank 13th through 15th in the nation in team average. Here is a look at all three team's average scores by event.

The Last Time Out

The Midshipmen placed fifth at the West Point Open in their last competition on Feb. 1. Navy posted a total score of 398.15, which included a season-high score of 64.4 on the pommel horse. A trio of Mids medaled at the event, including Thomas Goodell, Jeff Sauers and Trevor Carson. Goodell took third on the rings, while Sauers and Carson both took fifth on the vault and high bar, respectively.

A Young Squad

With a combined 19 underclassmen that includes 12 freshmen and seven sophomores, Navy is the youngest NCAA Division I men's gymnastics team. Only Cal has more freshmen (13) than Navy, while the Mids are the only team in the nation without a senior on their roster.

Up Next

Navy will meet Army for the Star next weekend. The annual dual between the rivals will take place Feb. 23 at West Point.
