Three Mids Medal at the West Point Open

Feb. 2, 2013

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Navy gymnastics team wrapped up competition at the West Point Open on Saturday night with the individual event finals. Sophomores Thomas Goodell, Jeff Sauers and Trevor Carson all placed in the top five of their respective event finals to earn medals.

Goodell was the first of eight gymnasts to compete on the rings and he registered a score of 14.0, which was good for third place and his season-high mark. Ryan Ponce of Springfield won the event with a score of 14.1.

Sauers and Carson both followed by taking fifth place in their respective events. Sauers scored a 13.9 on the vault and Carson a 12.45 on the high bar.

Junior Chris Junghans competed on the pommel horse and placed eighth with a score of 11.5. Mitchell Larios was the fifth Mid in action on Saturday night and registered a 12.5 on the parallel bars, taking eighth place.

"I thought we did a good job tonight and there was another indication of some improvement," said Navy head coach Sho Fukushima. "You can tell now the rest of the team is ready to get back and start training even harder now. I feel good about that."

Navy will be off next weekend but will return to competition on Feb. 16 when it travels to Atlanta, Ga., to face Army and Air Force in the All-Academy Championships.
