SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Navy men's track and field program opened the 2013 outdoor season at the Point Loma Open in San Diego on Saturday. Navy won seven events and registered five IC4A-qualifying marks at the non-team scored meet.

"We had a tremendous week of work out here and we did a pretty good job at the meet," head coach Stephen Cooksey said. "The pole vaulters did well. The throwers looked very good and turned in a couple of IC4A marks and there were a couple of other good surprises."

The Navy throwers showed their depth as four different Mids won the four throwing disciplines and each doing so with a new personal best.

Sophomore David Capote won the javelin with a personal best and IC4A-qualifying mark of 194-11 (59.41m). Junior Kyle Fortney won the discus with a personal best and IC4A-qualifying mark of 158-1 (48.20m). Fortney also set a new PR in the hammer throw with a second-place mark of 172-3 (52.52m).

Junior Brandon Swindler took first place in the hammer throw with a personal best mark of 173-6 (52.90m) and junior Zack Duncavage won the shot put at 49-8 (15.14m), an outdoor season personal best.

Junior Brett Bogaard won the 400m dash at 49.09 and took third in the 200m dash at 22.09. Bogaard was racing the 400m for the first time in his career. Freshman Austin Batiste was second in the 200m dash at 21.95. Senior outdoor team captain Kolton Kempel was third in the 400m dash (50.01) and fourth in the 200m dash (22.43).

Sophomore Joshua Kingsland won the 800m run at 1:54.62.

Senior Mitch Simmonds placed second in the 110m high hurdles with an IC4A-qualifying time of 14.59. Simmonds also teamed up with the 4x100m relay team of sophomore Rico Goldstone, Batiste and Bogaard, placing second and clocking an IC4A time of 42.17.

Sophomore Mark Vetere won the pole vault with an IC4A-qualying height of 16-0 (4.88m). Junior Ryan Kochert was second at 15-6¼ (4.73m) and sophomore Adam Vetere placed third, also clearing 15-6¼ (4.73m).

The Mids spent this past week, their spring break, training in San Diego with Saturday's meet capping off the trip. While in Southern California, Navy spent a day training at the USOC Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista and also visited an elementary school, spending the day running the children through track and field drills with small hurdles and miniaturized throwing implements.

Navy will host American, Colgate and Delaware State next Saturday at Ingram Field at 10:00 AM.
