Oct. 13, 2014 CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- Members of the Navy swimming and diving teams combined to earn three weekly awards from the Patriot League on Monday. Marlin Brutkiewicz (So., Mobile, Ala.) was tabbed as the Patriot League men's swimmer of the week, while Nate Belch (Fr., Tucson, Ariz.) and Julie Jesse (Jr., Edwardsburg, Mich.) swept the diver-of-the-week laurels.
Brutkiewicz earned the first weekly nod of his career thanks to his efforts against Georgia Tech and George Mason. He swept the breaststroke events against the Yellow Jackets, winning the 100M event (1:02.94) by three-quarters of a second and the 200M race (2:18.33) by nearly three seconds. He then won the 100M breast (1:03.90) by over one second and placed fourth in the 200 individual medley (2:13.03) against the Patriots. His 100M breaststroke time against Georgia Tech ranks fourth in school history.
His three wins this year leaves him just one victory away from tying his total for all of the 2013-14 season.
Belch opened his collegiate career by placing second on the one meter (275.55) and third on the three meter (251.33) against Georgia Tech, then followed that performance by sweeping the two boards (285.98 and 332.10, respectively) against George Mason. Each of his two victories came by at least 55 points, with his score on the three meter against the Patriots qualifying him for the 2015 NCAA Zone Diving Championship.
Jesse also punched her ticket to this spring's Zone Meet with her winning score of 270.60 on the one meter against George Mason. And like Belch, she too completed the double on the day against the Patriots by also winning the three-meter board (252.30). Those two victories came by a total of 80 points. She had placed second on the one meter (255.53) and fourth on the three meter (254.40) one week prior against Georgia Tech.
This is the fourth weekly award earned by Jesse in her career.
Navy's swimming and diving teams will play host to UMBC Wednesday at 4 p.m. in Lejeune Hall.
