Oct. 25, 2014 PHILADELPHIA – The Navy women’s racing program completed a strong day of action on Saturday at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta. Racing on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, the Mids’ top varsity eight crew won the Championship Eights event on a day that saw Navy boats finish top-four in all three races that they entered.
The action for the Mids on Saturday began with two entries in the Novice Eights race. Competing amongst a field of 36 boats, Navy’s ‘A’ crew completed the 2.5-mile course in a time of 15:46.94 to finish fourth overall. The Mids’ second entry finished the race with an original time of 17:41.55, but incurred a 30-second penalty to fall one spot from 17th back to 18th place.
Navy had just one boat entered in the next race, the Club Eights competition. In that event, the Mids put down a fast time of 15:22.05 that ranked third-best behind the ‘A’ boats of Drexel and Old Dominion, respectively. 31 total boats raced in the Club Eights competition.
The final racing of the day was for the Championship Eights title. In a dominant performance the ‘A’ boat from Navy finished over eight seconds ahead of the field to collect the victory. Navy ‘A’ completed the race with a time of 14:19.48. Navy ‘B’ was the Mids’ second entry in the race and that boat finished with a time of 14:55.45, good for 10th place.
Navy will close out the fall portion of its schedule next Saturday with action in Fairfax Station, Va. at the Head of the Occoquan.
