Nov. 10, 2014 Bellingham, Wash. - Three Navy sailors made the trip out to Bellingham, Wash. for the 2014 Laser Performance College Sailing Singlehanded National Championships.
The Midshipmen enjoyed the journey and loved experiencing the sights of this beautiful venue. Eighteen sailors were present in both the men's and women's championships and the competition looked to very very stiff. Unfortunately, the fleet arrived to heavy fog for the first day of racing and the boats were held on shore while we wired for the fog to clear. When the sun came out, the boats left the dock hoping to begin the event, but were just left to drift with no wind whatsoever.
With no racing on Saturday, the start time for Sunday was moved up in hopes that some of the lost races could still happen. On Sunday morning, a storm brought rain with strong winds and big waves to the racecourse. For the first race and a half, the fleet battled 20 knot winds with 4-5 foot waves. Throughout the day, the sky cleared and the conditions changed dramatically, eventually becoming dead calm by 2 in the afternoon, ending the racing ahead of schedule.
On the Women's side, five races were completed with Mary Hall finishing seventh and Emma Ferris coming in 15th. After six men's races, Addison Hackstaff was eighth overall.
