DELAND, Fla. - Behind senior forward
Morgan Dankanich's three points on one goal and one assist, Navy defeated Stetson, 3-1 Sunday in Deland, Fla. Navy improved to 1-2-1 while Stetson fell to 0-3-1.
"We have had a tough time finding a way to come together offensively and put forth a complete team effort until today," Navy head coach Carin Gabarra said. "We have had many chances to convert the past three games but were unable to finish. Today everyone contributed the way we needed to get the result that we are capable of getting."
Navy (1-2-1) had its strongest outing of the young 2014 season, holding advantages over Stetson in shots, 19-6, shots on goal, 8-2 and corner kicks 5-3. The Mids saw three different goal scorers in Morgan Dankanich (Glenmoore, Pa.), Clare MacAdam (Fr., Palmyra, N.J.) and Cat Macklin (So., McLean, Va.). Of the three goals, Navy tallied four assists, one each from Dankanich, Lily Kraemer (Sr., Pitman, N.J.), Courtney Hook (So., Midlothian, Va.) and Natalie Dzhandzhapanyan (Fr., Diamond Bar, Calif.).
Navy wasted very little time on the offensive end, tallying the first goal of the game in the fourth minute. Dankanich dribbled to the top of Stetson's 18-yard box and led MacAdam into the box. MacAdam took possession of the pass and finished off the play for her first collegiate goal.
Stetson responded in the 11th minute to tie the game, 1-1. The Hatters Brianne Boldrin, from the right side of the 18-yard box, lofted a high arcing shot that went over the head of Navy freshman goalkeeper Taygan Grundy (Fremont, Calif.) for the equalizer.
The Mids then connected on a bang-bang play for the go-ahead goal in the 32nd minute to lead 2-1. Navy midfielder Hook found Kraemer open 10 yards into the box. Kraemer took one touch and found Macklin on the far post, who then finished the play for her first goal of the season.
Leading 2-1 after 45 minutes, Navy added onto its lead in the 52nd minute off the foot of Dankanich. Rachel Feldman, from the right side of the field, led teammate Dzhandzhapanyan to the top of the 18-yard box. Dzhandzhapanyan dribbled to the left side of the box to find Dankanich opened on the near post. The senior forward scored for the third-straight contest to give Navy its first win of the season.
Grundy earned her first collegiate win in net, allowing just one goal in 45 minutes. Teammate Dayton Wetherby (So., Wesley Chapel, Fla.) finished the final 45 minutes, tallying one save on one chance. Stetson goalkeeper Kahri Smith allowed three goals on five chances.
Navy will wrap up its five-match road trip on Friday, Sept. 5 against James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va. Match is set for 7 p.m.
