Final Stats

ATHENS, Ga. -- Austin Jones (Jr., Dallas, Texas) recorded a pair of victories in the main draw of his singles flight to highlight the efforts of the Navy men's tennis team at the Southern Intercollegiates hosted by the Georgia this weekend in Athens, Ga.

"The guys got to compete against some great players this weekend," said Navy head coach Chris Garner. "They did really well. Competing against a number of players from the SEC schools as well as Division II national winner Armstrong Atlantic was a great experience.

"It was great to see Austin win his first two rounds. He ran into a very strong player from Vanderbilt in the quarter-finals of his flight. I know the guys are confident in their ability and will continue to work at becoming stronger each week this fall."

The field of over 100 players from schools such as Arkansas, Clemson, the College of Charleston, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Kentucky, Oklahoma and Virginia Tech was divided in three singles divisions and two doubles divisions. Jones, who competed in Division III in singles, first posted a 6-2, 6-0 win over Carl Solik of Charlotte in the round of 32 before winning a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 match over Branch Terrell in the round of 16. He would then drop a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Vanderbilt's Baker Newman in the flight's quarterfinal round.

Navy's additional victories at the event came from Walker Sims (Fr., Memphis, Tenn.), who won a three-set decision in the consolation bracket of the Division II singles draw, and from Blake Daniel (Sr., Overland Park, Kan.), who won his consolation match in Division III singles.

The Mids will resume their fall season Sept. 26-28 when they play host to the Navy National All-Conference Invitational. Arkansas, Delaware, George Washington and UMBC comprise this year's field for the three-day event.
