BOSTON, Mass. - The Navy men's soccer team (4-4-1, 0-1-0 PL) dropped its Patriot League opener at Boston U. (5-2-1, 1-0-0 PL), 2-1, on Saturday evening at Nickerson Field. The loss snapped Navy's 11-game winning streak against conference opponents.
"I thought we played well and our guys followed the game plan to a tee," head coach Dave Brand said. "But you have to score on one end and not let them score on the other end and we didn't do that tonight. We had some good looks, but we had some narrow misses and a lot of chances we should have done better with."
Navy dominated the run of play on Saturday, holding a commanding 25-4 advantage in shots. Boston U. mustered just two shots in the entire second half, however, the Terriers were opportunistic enough to score on both of those attempts.
Boston U. got its first goal in the 53rd minute when David Amirani tapped a pass to Lucas McBride, who hit a low driving shot to the right side of the goal from 18 yards out.
In the 64th minute, Boston U. goalkeeper Nick Thomson sent forward a long pass from his own box and Jordan Barker headed it on to a streaking Dominic Badji. Badji sent a shot to the far right post to put the Terriers ahead, 2-0.
Badji has a team-high four goals for Boston U.
Navy cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 79th minute when sophomore forward Alex Evans scored. Junior Derek Vogel flicked a ball to junior Jamie Dubyoski who headed it forward to a cutting Evans. Evans ran in and let the ball bounce up and then headed it over the reach of Thomson and under the bottom of the cross bar and down over the goal line.
Evans scored his second goal of the season and the fifth of his career.
Navy had multiple scoring chances in the final 10 minutes of the game, but couldn't net the equalizer.
Thomson made nine saves in goal for Boston U. Navy goalkeeper Jackson Morgan made one save and allowed two goals on the three shots he faced.
Duboyski took a game-high five shots and Thomas Shiiba, Geoff Fries, Joseph Greenspan, Vogel and Evans all registered three shots.
Navy outshot Boston U. 11-3 in the first half and 13-2 in the second half. The Mids also held a 10-3 edge in shots on goal and a 6-1 advantage of corner kicks.
Navy will return to Annapolis to host No. 20 George Mason (7-0-1) on Tuesday at 7:00 PM. George Mason is one of four remaining unbeaten teams in the country along with Air Force, Penn State and UC-Irvine.
