ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Each of the 10 members of the Navy men's tennis team who took to the courts during the Navy National All-Conference Invitational this weekend in Annapolis won at least one match against a field that included players from Arkansas, Delaware, George Washington and UMBC. The Mids combined to win 12 singles and seven doubles matches over the course of the invite that came to a conclusion Sunday on the USNA Tennis Courts.
"I thought it was a great weekend of competition for the guys," said Navy head coach Chris Garner. "They faced some very strong players from Arkansas and George Washington and they also got to see very challenging teams from UMBC and Delaware. Just getting the opportunity to play different style opponents that are really into it can only help us as the season moves along.
"Seeing them play a great mix of players this weekend, players who are comparable to their level or in some cases a little above, gives us coaches the opportunity to see our guys in different facets of their game, in different pressure matches and how they can improve in those areas and hopefully get stronger as the season progresses."
Leading the way for the Mids was team captain Blake Daniel (Sr., Overland Park, Kan.), who won the No. 3 singles flight and teamed with both Thomas Pecor (So., Houston, Texas) and Alex Gaines (Jr., Wilmington, N.C.) to win the No. 2 doubles flight. Daniel posted identical 2-1 records in both singles and doubles this weekend.
Also putting together 4-2 records at the invite were Calvin Mark (Sr., Union City, Calif.) and Joshua Martin (Fr., Foley, Ala.). Mark tallied 2-1 records at both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles where he teamed with Aries Wong (Fr., Bethesda, Md.), while Martin attained 2-1 records at No. 8 singles and No. 4 doubles. Krishna Jana (So., Seabrook, Texas), who compiled a 3-3 record this weekend, completed the No. 4 doubles pairing with Martin.
Additionally, Tyler Burnett (Sr., Fayetteville, Ga.) accrued a 3-3 record at the invite, which included a 2-1 mark at No. 5 singles.
"I think the guys are definitely moving along in doubles in an aggressive fashion," said Garner. "They are getting more comfortable with taking chances with offensive opportunities.
"Seeing Calvin and Blake and what it means to them to be part of the program, means a lot to me and the rest of the team. They, and Tyler, who has made some great strides and we hope continues to mature and move along as the season progresses, are seniors. And when the program means a lot to the seniors, it is a lot of fun to be part of for the coaches and the rest of the players on the team. I saw what it meant to them this weekend. The tennis experience at the Naval Academy for the seniors means a lot to them and they have put a lot into it. That makes my job a lot more enjoyable."
Navy will continue its fall season Oct. 10-12 when the Mids take part in the Wake Forest Invite.
