ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's soccer team (1-1-1) earned its first win of the season with a dominating 5-0 win over visiting Appalachian State (0-2-1), 5-0, on Friday evening at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. Five different players scored and Navy won its ninth straight home game.
"It's always good to get the win," head coach Dave Brandt said. "I thought the goal right before halftime was big. Going up 3-0 at the half is tough for any opponent to come back on. I thought there were a number of good goals tonight that came out of good ball movement."
Junior forward Thomas Shiiba scored Navy's first goal of the game in the 21st minute. Sophomore Matt Saunders played the ball to junior Derek Vogel who passed ahead to a cutting Shiiba. Shiiba took control of the ball, made a great individual move to shake off a defender and then finished to the far side of the goal from 15 yards out.
Just seven minutes later Navy added its second goal when Shiiba passed ahead to senior Geoff Fries, who deftly tapped the ball back to freshman Aubrey Jones, who fired a rocket to the back of the net from 25 yards out for his first collegiate goal.
Navy would get a big goal from Fries just before halftime in the 44th minute to take a commanding 3-0 lead into the break. Junior Michael Parker carried the ball down the right side and then crossed to Fries who finished in front of the net.
Navy kept the momentum to open the second half and junior P.J. Suess sent a long cross from the right side to the a cutting Daniel Camuti who connected on a diving header from the left side for his first career goal in the 54th minute.
The Mids weren't done scoring and in the 62nd minute junior forward Jamie Dubyoski took control of an Appalachian State giveaway in the box and sent an unselfish pass to his left to sophomore Alex Evans who scored on a one-time finish to put the Mids ahead 5-0.
Navy's five goals were the most since defeating Richmond, 5-0, on September 15, 2012.
Junior goalkeeper Jackson Morgan needed to make just one save in 64 minutes to earn the first win of his career. Freshman Mac Burke made his college debut and played the final 26 minutes to combine with Morgan on Navy's first shutout of the season.
Navy held a commanding 22-4 edge in shots and led in shots on goal, 10-1. Navy also led in corner kicks, 4-2. Navy played 27 different players in the match.
"This game was really important for us coming off a rough weekend in Denver," said Shiiba. "The goal here was to come out on fire and set the standard for the rest of the year. It was really important that we make a stamp on the season and not just come out with a win but a win with an exclamation point."
Navy will have a big test on Monday as No. 10 Maryland will travel to Annapolis for a showdown at 8:00 PM. The Navy-Maryland men's game will follow the Navy-Maryland women's soccer game at 5:30 PM in a special Mid-Terps doubleheader.
