ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy and Temple men's tennis teams split the 12 matches the squads played against each other Sunday at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md. Both programs claimed two doubles wins and four singles victories on the USNA Tennis Courts.
Navy's victories in doubles came from its Nos. 1 and 3 tandems. Thomas Pecor (So., Houston, Texas) and Aries Wong (Fr., Bethesda, Md.) combined for a 6-4 win at the top flight over Temple's Hicham Belkssir and Nicolas Paulus. Andrey Majkic (Fr., Jacksonville, Fla.) and Tyler Tossavainen (So., Fleming Island, Fla.) picked up Navy's additional win as the duo posted a 6-3 victory over Ondre Cargill and Hernan Vasconez.
"I thought Andrey and Tyler did a great job in doubles" said Navy head coach Chris Garner. "Yesterday they had a tough match in doubles, and today they came right back with great energy. They got off to a quick start and finished strong."
Wong and Tossavainen also tallied singles victories on the day for the Mids. Wong recorded a 6-4, 6-0 win over Belkssir at the No. 2 flight, with Tossavainen posting a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 triumph over Vineet Naran at No. 6.
"They (Majkic and Tossavainen) had two great singles matches. Andrey ran out of steam a little in the third set, but Tyler kept his momentum and finished strong. The more we have guys that have that energy, that will carry over to every court and the guys will really enjoy competing with one another."
Completing the list of Navy's victors on the day were Tucker Massie (Fr., Bloomfield Hills, Mich.), who defeated Filip Stipcic, 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4 at No. 3 singles, and Tyler Burnett (Sr., Fayetteville, Ga.), who topped Santiago Canete, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 4 flight.
Navy as a team earned victories in two of the four doubles flights and in three of the eight singles flights at this weekend's round-robin invitational that also included St. Bonaventure. Navy's two victorious doubles teams Sunday won their respective flights on the weekend, with Wong also winning at No. 2 singles, Burnett earning the No. 4 singles title and Tossavainen claiming the No. 6 singles championship.
"You definitely learn a lot more through competition than through practice," said Garner. "We definitely saw areas we can build upon, even areas we are improving and doing well on. We can keep trying to shore those up and as long as everyone is moving in the same direction I think the guys will be confident and motivated to keep moving along in the fall."
Navy's fall season will continue when the Mids take part in the Southern Intercollegiates starting Friday in Athens, Ga.
