HARTFORD, Conn. - The No. 12 Navy squash team (12-4) looked to return from the holiday break rested and refreshed for the beginning of the second half of its season. Instead, head coach Craig Dawson lost two starters this week to injuries and was forced to juggle his lineup for this weekend's matches against three of the nation's top 25 teams.
Navy opened Saturday with a heartbreaking 5-4 loss to longtime rival Bates, who is ranked 14th in the country. The Mids were down 4-2 with seniors Colin Barry (St. Louis, Mo.) and John Hsu (Manhassett, N.Y.), and sophomore Will Walker (Scarborough, N.Y.) in the midst of their matches. All three of the players were down 2-1 in their respective matches before making their move.
Barry, who came into the match undefeated this season, won the final two games (11-6, 11-7) of his match against Nabil Saleem to secure his 12th victory of the season and pull the Mids to within one.
Walker, who was playing the No. 8 slot, also won his final two games (11-8, 11-7) to claim a 3-2 win over Carlos Ames and tie he team score with four wins apiece.
Hsu, meanwhile, was all square at 9 in the fifth match at the No. 7 position, however, senior Jason Shrubb was able to hold him off for the match-winning 11-9 victory.
In addition to Barry and Walker, junior Bill Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.) scored a 3-2 (11-8, 5-11, 9-11, 11-6, 11-8) win over Darrius Campbell and sophomore Randy Beck (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) posted a 3-1 (11-8, 5-11, 12-10, 12-10) victory over Bates' Andy Cannon.
"It was a classic Navy-Bates match," said Dawson. "I was really proud at how our guys fought in the match."
Navy was unable to bounce back in its nightcap against No. 2 Trinity, as the Bantams scored a 9-0 win against the Mids. The highlight of the match for the Mids was freshman Josh Hughes (Malvern, Pa.) nearly pulling off the upset at No. 2. Trinity's Miled Zarazua built a 2-1 lead, however, Hughes battled his way back into the match by way of an 11-9 victory in the fourth. Zarazua answered with an 11-9 win in the final game to take the match.
The Mids will close out the weekend with an 11:00 am match at No. 21 Amherst on Sunday.
