Men's Tennis Splits Two Matches

Jan. 18, 2015

Final Stats

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's tennis team completed its first weekend of the season by splitting a pair of matches at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis. The Mids first won a 6-1 decision over St. Bonaventure before falling by an identical score to Old Dominion.

Navy (2-1) swept the three doubles matches from St. Bonaventure (0-1) to each the doubles point in the match. Navy's No. 2 team of Blake Daniel (Sr., Overland Park, Kan.) and Calvin Mark (Sr., Union City, Calif.) won the first match to be completed, a 6-3 win over Victor Blanco and Hector Martinez, then a 6-2 victory at the No. 3 flight by the tandem of Tyler Tossavainen (So., Fleming Island, Fla.) and Aries Wong (Fr., Bethesda, Md.) over T.J. DeSanto and Trevor Haskell clinched the point for the Mids.

The Bonnies tied the match at one point apiece when Andrew Blair posted a 6-2, 6-4 win over Tossavainen at No. 2 singles, but the Mids would go on to win each of the remaining singles contests. Navy regained the lead when Tyler Burnett (Sr., Fayetteville, Ga.) posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Haskell at No. 4 singles, then Joshua Martin (Fr., Foley, Ala.) gave the Mids their third team point as he defeated DeSanto by the score of 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 6 flight. Andrey Majkic (Fr., Jacksonville, Fla.) assured Navy of the overall victory with his 6-3, 6-4 win over Martinez at No. 5 singles.

"I thought the seniors did a really good job," said Navy head coach Chris Garner, of his team's efforts against the Bonnies. "They came out with strong energy in doubles -- Blake and Cal led the way -- and in singles Ty Burnett came out and got a really quick lead on his guy. His was the first match to finish and that was really helpful for the team to follow.

"If I were a plebe, I would hang around the seniors as much as possible. Not just for tennis, but to be successful at the Academy. I think that mix could be really helpful to the guys who are younger than the seniors."

Old Dominion (1-0) would start its match against the Mids by winning the first two doubles contests to earn the available point. Navy would win the third match, however, as Daniel and Mark posted a 7-6 (9-7) victory over Theophile Lanthiez and Carlos Lopez Villa at the No. 2 flight.

The Monarchs would go on to claim wins in five of the six singles matches, with two of those wins coming in three sets.

Michael Weindl started the singles portion of the dual by defeating Thomas Pecor (So., Houston, Texas), 6-0, 6-3, at No. 4 singles. Lopez Villa then posted a 6-4, 6-2 win over Mark to increase Old Dominion's margin to 3-0. Zvonimir Podvinski clinched the team victory for the visitors with his 7-5, 6-3 win over Wong at No. 6 singles.

Daniel put Navy's point on the scoreboard when he posted a 7-5, 6-4 win over Lanthiez at No. 4 singles.

The remaining two matches were each extended into three sets. Adam Moundir defeated Austin Jones (Jr., Dallas, Texas), 4-6, 7-6, 6-3, at No. 2 singles, and Javier Jover Maestre recorded a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 victory over Walker Sims (Fr., Memphis, Tenn.) at the No. 5 flight.

"Calvin and Blake did a really good job in doubles," said Garner after the end of the match against the Monarchs. "They had a lot of energy and were aggressive and really set the tone for the rest of the guys.

"ODU was too tough in the other matches. All of our guys competed hard, giving them chances to make competitive matches. If they are willing to work hard each week, they will get better."

Navy will return to the Tose Family Tennis Center Saturday for matches against Richmond and St. Francis-Brooklyn.
