NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Columbia posted wins in 10 events on its way to recording a 162-138 victory over the Navy men's swimming and diving team Friday afternoon at Uris Pool in New York.
The Lions (7-2) jumped out to an early 37-19 lead on the Mids (7-6) through three events. Tom Duvall (Jr., Durham, N.H.) helped Navy cut into the deficit (44-31) as he won the 200 free by just under one second with a time of 1:39.60. After Columbia swimmers placed first and second in the next event, the 100 back, Navy again trailed by just 13 points (63-50) when Marlin Brutkiewicz (So., Mobile, Ala.) won the 100 breaststroke for Navy by over one second with his clocking of 55.92.
Columbia would win the ensuing five events, including two events in which its swimmers claimed first, second and third place, to separate itself from Navy.
Brutkiewicz and Duvall each recorded a second victory during the latter half of the meet. Brutkiewicz won the 200 breast in a time of 2:03.47, and Duvall touched the wall first in the 500 free with a posting of 4:34.82. Young Tae Seo (Fr., Los Angeles, Calif.) also notched a victory on the day as his clocking of 1:51.81 gave him a two-tenths of a second win in the 200 individual medley.
Navy closed the meet by winning the 400 freestyle relay. The foursome of Ethan King (So., Collierville, Tenn.), Duvall, Dain Bomberger (Sr., Lititz, Pa.) and Riley Mita (Sr., Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) combined for a time of 3:06.89 to win the race by a full two seconds.
Today's meet closed the dual meet season for the Mids. Navy will next be in action Feb. 18-21 when it competes in the Patriot League Championship in Lewisburg, Pa.
