Eighth-Ranked Princeton Tops No. 16 Navy Squash

Final Stats

PRINCETON, N.J. - The 16th-ranked Navy squash team dropped its second match of the weekend when No. 8 Princeton scored an 8-1 decision over the Mids Sunday afternoon in New Jersey. Navy is now 14-2 on the year, while Princeton improved to 1-1.

"We've made good progress over the course of the season and even between our match on Friday against Penn and today against Princeton," said Navy head coach Craig Dawson. "This was a tough loss, but there were some encouraging signs that our young team can build off of."

The final score was not indicative of how competitive the overall match was as four of the individual matches were decided in five games, while just two were 3-0 sweeps.

Navy freshman Senen Ubina (Greenwich, Conn.) earned the Mids' lone win of the match, rallying to win the final two games, 11-9 and 11-7, to earn the victory at the No. 1 spot over Cody Cortes in five. Ubina is a familiar name around the Tiger squash program, as Ubina's older sister, Maria Elena Ubina, is a two-time First-Team All-America squash player at Princeton.

Sophomore Jack Herold (Chicago, Ill.) dropped his opening game against Clark Doyle, but took a 2-1 advantage with back-to-back 11-6 and 11-5 wins. Doyle, however, came back to win two in a row to secure the win in five at the No. 2 position.

At the No. 4 spot, Navy junior Reed Whitney (Ladue, Mo.) and Princeton's Jarryd Osborne traded wins before Osborne secured the victory in the fifth with an 11-4 win.

Senior team captain Bill Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.) took a 1-0 lead in his match at the No. 5 position against Princeton's Komron Shayegan, but his foe won two in a row to pull ahead, 2-1, Kacergis, meanwhile, fought back and took game four, 11-6, to even the match. Shayegan went on to beat Kacergis with an 11-2 game five victory.

Dropping matches in four games were junior Randy Beck (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) at No. 3, freshman Dylan Sweeney (New York, N.Y.) at No. 6 and freshman Jamie Kjorlien (Greenwich, Conn.) at No. 8.

Navy will return to the competition courts when it plays host to 11th-ranked Dartmouth on Dec. 4 at 10:00 am.
