ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's basketball team (2-2) used a big second half to pull away from Goucher (2-2) in a 76-47 win on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Hall. After leading by just two points at halftime, Navy outscored Goucher, 50-23, in the final 20 minutes for the 29-point victory.
"It wasn't a very good first half for us," said head coach Ed DeChellis. "But credit Goucher, they made some shots. I thought we came out and played well in the second half though. We got our hands on the ball defensively and pushed the tempo and got some breakaway layups."
Navy sophomore Tom Lacey, filling in for injured starter Jace Hogan, had his first career double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Senior center Will Kelly also posted a double-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots.
Navy's leading scorer Shawn Anderson had 13 points and five rebounds to score in double-figures for the third straight game.
Navy had a slow start against the Division III squad and back-to-back 3-pointers from Kevin Miles and Norman Allen put the visitors ahead, 15-11, midway through the first half.
Navy got back into the game by going inside and got a bucket from junior Edward Alade and then Lacey slammed home a dunk and made the ensuing free throw after being fouled. Sophomore Bryce Dulin and Lacey then scored inside on back-to-back possessions as Navy began to take control of the game.
The Mids ran away with the game in the second half, opening the period on a 14-3 run to take a double-digit lead. Six different players scored during the spurt and Navy had three straight fastbreak layups from Dulin, senior guard Tilman Dunbar and Anderson.
Junior guard Tim Abruzzo provided a big spark for Navy in the second half as he made his return to the lineup after missing his entire sophomore season with a knee injury.
Abruzzo scored nine points in a span of 70 seconds to push Navy's lead to 20 points. He scored his first points in over 20 months on an and-1 breakaway layup and then drilled back-to-back 3-pointers from opposite wings.
"I thought Tim Abruzzo coming off the bench was really big for us," said DeChellis. "He banged a big shot or two for us and he had the three-point play. His lift off the bench was really important."
Anderson added eight points in the final 12 minutes of the game as the Mids cruised in the second half for the 29-point win.
Navy junior forward James Hemphill had six points and eight rebounds. Dunbar amassed six points, six assists, four rebounds and two steals and sophomore guard Nourse Fox had six assists as well.
It was the first time since 2012 that two Navy players had double-doubles in the same game with Lacey and Kelly accomplishing the feat on Sunday.
Navy had a 50-21 edge in rebounding and grabbed 23 offensive boards. Navy also used its size advantage for a large advantage in points in the paint (48-6).
Navy shot 46 percent (30-of-65) from the floor but was just 19 percent (4-of-21) on 3-pointers.
Lacey established new career-highs with his 13 points and 11 rebounds. Seven of his boards were on the offensive glass.
"Tom Lacey stepped in tremendously for Jace Hogan," said DeChellis. "He got 13 points and 11 rebounds and James Hemphill came off the bench and got eight rebounds. Those two kids rebounded the ball very well for us and kept some things alive for us."
Miles led Goucher with 14 points and Tucker Canary had six assists and four steals.
Navy will play its first of seven straight away games at UMBC on Wednesday evening.
Sunday's game was a campus round matchup of UNCG's Spartan Showcase. Navy will play three games at the Greensboro Coliseum for the Spartan Showcase next week.
