CHESTER, Pa. - Behind two goals from senior Cody Guerry, Army West Point (5-6-5, 3-2-3 PL) defeated Navy (8-8-1, 4-4-0 PL), 2-0, at the Star Match and Army-Navy Cup IV at PPL Park, the home of Major League Soccer's Philadelphia Union, on Tuesday evening.
Guerry took advantage of two defensive lapses by Navy to get a big lead early in the game for the Black Knights.
Guerry scored his first goal of the game in the 19th minute after a Navy misplayed clear. Army West Point served the ball into the box and a Navy player headed it right to Army West Point's Brett Becia, who passed in to Guerry, who was deemed to be just onside, and he finished a shot to the left side of the goal with his left foot.
Guerry scored his second goal of the first half just nine minutes later. The Black Knights played a ball up the right side to Nick Williams and Navy goalkeeper Jackson Morgan came out to try to break up the chance at the top corner of the penalty box.
Williams took the ball and moved around a sliding Morgan and then passed to Guerry who was positioned at the center of the box. Guerry then shot from 18 yards out past two Navy defenders who had raced back to try to protect the goal line.
"Army played well and credit to them," said head coach Dave Brandt. "But we gave up two bad goals that we just can't give up. That put us in a big hole. We fired two or three really good looks just high and we needed to bury one of those."
Navy's lone goal came in the 69th minute from senior Jamie Dubyoski. Senior Thomas Shiiba was taken down in the box by Army West Point goalkeeper Chris Britt and Navy was awarded a penalty kick. Dubyoski blasted the shot to the top of the goal for his third tally of the season.
The goal also moved Dubyoski into the Navy all-time scoring top 10 list. He is tied for ninth in program history with 58 points on 23 goals and 12 assists.
Navy had several other scoring chances, including in the first half when Dubyoski fired a low shot right at Britt in the 18th minute and junior Daniel Camuti had a shot clang off the crossbar in the 21st minute. Sophomore Daniel Zaremba had a shot go just wide right in the 39th minute and senior Thomas Shiiba just missed on a chance in the final five seconds before the first half ended.
Senior P.J. Suess nearly curled in a shot to the upper-90 on a free kick but the attempt went off the crossbar in the second half. Suess also served a corner kick in the 88th minute that sophomore Thomas Moore headed just high.
Junior Sam Bascom had two chances late, sending a shot just high in the 89th minute and then he had a shot saved by Britt in the 90th minute.
Morgan made two saves in the first half and sophomore Mac Burke stopped two shots in the second half for Navy. Britt made five saves for the Black Knights.
Navy outshot Army West Point, 15-10, and held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks. Shiiba took a team-high four shots.
The game was played in front of 9,316 fans, which was the third-largest NCAA Division I men's soccer crowd this season. It was the second biggest Army-Navy Cup crowd, behind last season's total of 10,168.
Navy was 5-0-1 against Army West Point in the last six meetings and the Black Knights won their first game against Navy since 2008. Navy still holds a 40-28-14 lead in the all-time series.
With one game remaining on the Patriot League schedule, Navy is currently tied with Army West Point for fifth place with 12 points. Navy could finish anywhere from the No. 4 seed to the No. 7 seed. The top six teams make the postseason tournament.
Navy's final regular season game will be on Friday at home against Boston U. at 7 PM. The Patriot League Tournament begins on Tuesday, Nov. 10 with two quarterfinal matches.
