Navy Claims Four Weekly Swimming & Diving Awards

Dec. 14, 2015

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. â€"â€" The Patriot League office announced Monday that members of the Navy swimming and diving teams swept the weekly awards presented by the league for the period ending Dec. 13. Lauren Barber (Fr., New Wilmington, Pa.) and Marlin Brutkiewicz (Jr., Mobile, Ala.) were selected as the league's swimmers of the week, with Julie Jesse (Sr., Edwardsburg, Mich.) and Nate Belch (So., Tucson, Ariz.) being tabbed as the top divers in the league.

The Mids garnered their respective awards for their performances during Navy's sweep of Army West Point on Dec. 10. Navy's women's team defeated the Black Knights by the count of 234.5-65.5 and the Navy men posted a 213-86 victory over its rivals.

Barber had a hand in four victories on the night, a tally that included a trio of individual event triumphs. Her night began with swimming the breaststroke leg on Navy's victorious 200 medley relay team. The squad posted a time of 1:39.22 to win the event by 2.22 seconds and in the process break the Navy (1:41.37), Army-Navy Meet (1:41.71), Lejeune Hall (1:40.23) and Patriot League (1:41.12) records. Barber then touched the wall in a time of 1:46.84 to win the 200 freestyle by eight-tenths of a second. That effort broke the meet record (1:49.03), was the No. 5 time in school history and bettered the NCAA B cut standard of 1:47.79.

Barber's third win came in the 200 breaststroke where her time of 2:12.15 won the race by three-tenths of a second. It also was the No. 6 time in school history and was an NCAA B cut qualifying time (2:15.99). Her night ended after she posted a clocking of 2:00.77 to win the 200 individual medley by 1.80 seconds. The effort also ranks seventh in Navy history.

Brutkiewicz matched Barber's victory total on the night with a victory in a relay race and in three individual events. He became just the third men's swimmer in the 78-year Army-Navy series to win three individual events during a single meet.

Like Barber, Brutkiewicz swam the breaststroke portion of a winning 200 medley relay team. The Navy foursome clocked in with a time of 1:27.37 to win the event by just under one-half of a second and with the No. 4 time in school history. He followed that effort by winning the 100 breaststroke in a time of 52.98. That time won him the race by 1.49 seconds, ranks fourth in school history and is only one-tenth of a second behind the school, meet, pool and league standard. It also was well under the NCAA B cut standard (55.39) and was very close to the A cut time (52.08).

Brutkiewicz improved to 18-0 in breaststroke events during the current dual meet season when his time of 1:56.00 gave him a 4.13 second victory in the 200 breaststroke. That clocking also ranks fourth at Navy and was under the NCAA B cut time of 1:59.79. His final effort was a 1:48.81 in the 200 individual medley, which won the race by 85-hundredths of a second and was better than the NCAA B cut time of 1:49.09.

Jesse closed out her Army-Navy career by sweeping both boards during the meet. It marked the second time in her career in which she won both the one and three-meter events in the series and moves her into third place in meet history with six career wins. Additionally, she is one of just three divers to have won the one-meter board four times in Army-Navy meet history.

Jesse accrued 246.45 points to win the one-meter board by 26.78 points and tallied a score of 273.08 to win the three-meter event by 26.78 points.

Belch won the one-meter board against the Black Knights with a score of 315.75 points. He placed first in the event by 21.15 points. Belch then placed second to teammate Joe Kaszubowski (Fr., Whitefish Bay, Wis.) on the three-meter board with his score of 308.18. Kaszubowski won the event by 20.02 points.

Navy's teams will return to competition on Jan. 9 when both programs compete at North Carolina.
