Army-Navy Swimming & Diving Meet Slated for Thursday

Dec. 8, 2015

ANNAPOLIS, Md. â€"â€" The annual Army-Navy swimming and diving meet will be held Thursday evening at Lejeune Hall in Annapolis. Now in its 28th year of serving as a prelude to the football game between the two service academies, this year's dual meet will begin at 5 p.m.

Admission is free to the 1,000-seat facility. Fans are reminded that only those vehicles driven by someone with a Department of Defense identification card will be allowed access to the USNA grounds. All other fans must park outside of The Yard in downtown Annapolis and walk through the Gate One Visitor Center entrance. Everyone ages 18 and above must display a valid picture identification card (State issued driver's license, student I.D., or a government issued passport) to obtain entrance to the USNA. Those under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Shuttle bus service is not being offered to the meet.

For those fans unable to attend the meet, a free live video stream of it will be available (4:50 p.m. start) through the Patriot League Network on NavySports.com. Navy announcer Pete Medhurst will be joined on the stream by Rowdy Gaines, a three-time Olympic Gold Medalist, a member of the International Swimming Hall of Fame and the lead analyst for NBC's Olympic swimming coverage.

Additionally, live results from the meet will be available at NavySports.com (note that the link will not become active until after 4 p.m. on Thursday).

Each of the four programs enter Thursday's meet with undefeated records. The two Navy squads have posted identical 7-0 records this season, with the Army West Point programs each putting together 4-0 marks.

"The Army-Navy meet is always exciting," said Navy women's swimming head coach John Morrison. "And with Rowdy Gaines on the deck this year, the energy will definitely be through the roof. There is no doubt that Army West Point is a deeper and more consistent team than they have been in past years. We will need our senior leadership to step up and the strength of our team depth to meet the challenge. This is our last competition of the semester, and our goal is to compete at the highest level possible to prepare our team for the league championship meets and beyond. We look forward to the inspiration and energy of the greatest rivalry in collegiate sports to help us down that path."

"This is a special event which we are honored to be a part of," said Navy men's swimming head coach Bill Roberts. "Whether you have attended anywhere from zero to one hundred swimming and diving competitions in your life, you will walk away inspired by the energy, the efforts and the environment of the Army-Navy competition.

"Our goal is to race and compete to the very best of our abilities. I am proud of the body of work our team has put in along with their overall commitment. We hope and expect to put all of that on the line later this week!"

Last year's meet at West Point saw Navy emerge with a 194-106 win in the women's dual and a 199-101 victory in the men's contest. The win by the Navy women's team was its 27th consecutive win in the series, while the Navy men have won 25 meetings in a row with the Black Knights.

Members of the two women's teams have accounted for the top time among Patriot League swimmers this season in eight of the 14 events that will be contested Thursday night. Navy swimmers who have posted the best time in an event are Lauren Barber (Fr., New Wilmington, Pa.), 200 freestyle (1:49.27), 100 breaststroke (1:03.25) and 200 individual medley (2:00.36); Ellen Bradford (Sr., Knoxville, Tenn.), 200 breaststroke (2:16.48); and both the 200 medley (1:43.41) and 400 freestyle relay (3:23.03) teams. Army West Point's Molly Mucciarone has recorded the fastest time in the league in both the 50 freestyle (23.03) and 100 butterfly events (54.88).

The swimmers for the Navy and Army West Point men's squads have attained the fastest time in the league this season in 10 of the 14 events slated to be held Thursday. The list of the Navy men with the best time are Tom Duvall (Sr., Durham, N.H.), 200 freestyle (1:37.92), 500 freestyle (4:22.26); Alex Nickell (Sr., Loveland, Colo.), 1000 freestyle (9:21.49); Marlin Brutkiewicz (Jr., Mobile, Ala.), 200 breaststroke (1:56.66); Ryan Bailey (Jr., Youngstown, Ohio), 100 butterfly (48.61); Jonathan Debaugh (Sr., Conroe, Texas), 200 butterfly (1:47.95); and the Navy 200 medley (1:29.75) and 400 freestyle relay (3:00.12) foursomes.
