ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's track and field team recorded 73.50 team points to lead the nine-team field on day two of the 2015 Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Championship at Wesley A Brown Field House in Annapolis, Maryland. Navy tallied first-place finishers in the weight throw and 5000-meter run.
Navy holds a 25.50 point lead over second place Lehigh (48) through day two. Bucknell is right behind the top two teams with 45.25 points. Boston U. (27), Army (17), Lafayette (9.25), Holy Cross (8), American (4) and Colgate (2) round out the field.
"We could not have asked for better results and hope to top today's performance on Sunday," Navy head coach Stephen Cooksey said. "As we have seen over the last couple meets, our backend athletes continue compete at a high level to come close or match our top athletes in their respective events to build depth and gain more points."
Navy senior captain Tom Buffone (Freehold, N.J.) started the meet off with the Mids' first individual crown in the weight throw. Buffone garnered first team all-league honors with a career-best throw of 61ft-10.5 in (18.86m), which was 1ft-3.75in farther than his previous best. Freshman John Campbell (Amarillo, Texas) added to Buffone's performance with a fourth-place throw of 59-10.5in (18.25m). Both finishes helped combine for 15 team points, which was the second highest total for Navy in the six scored events.
Navy built off the success of the throwers as three distance runners placed in the top five of the 5000m run, including junior Sam Peckham (Valencia, Calif.) and sophomore Lucas Stalnaker (Tega Cay, S.C.) grabbing first and second. Peckham led the pack with a first-place time of 14:16.37, finishing 0:01.52 seconds ahead of teammate Stalnaker (14:18.39). Sophomore Mitchell Pratt (Temple City, Calif.) earned a fifth-place finish with a time of 14:35.28. All three runners combined for 22 team points, which was Navy's best event of the day.
Sophomore Cody Parker (South Vienna, Ohio) earned second team all-league honors in the high jump with a mark of 6ft-8.25in (2.04m). Classmate Nick Deterding placed sixth with a mark of 6ft-6.25in (1.99m).
Freshman Tyler Russell (Fort Collins, Colo.) had a strong performance in the heptathlon, tallying a season-best 4722 points and three-first place performances en route to second-team all-league laurels for second place.
Navy's 4x800m relay team that comprised of Ryan McCoy, Joshua Kingsland, Steve Schroeder and Nicholas Palermo finished third with a time of 7:28.84. Navy's relay squad finished 0:00.37 and 0:00.48 seconds off Army (7:28.47) and Bucknell (7:28.36) for first.
Senior Rico Goldstone (Breinigsville, Pa.) and sophomore Khaalif Wolfe (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) finished third and fifth in the long jump with marks of 22ft-10in (6.96m) and 22ft-5in (6.83m), respectively.
Navy will look to add to its lead and capture its third consecutive league title on Sunday. The final 16 events will begin at 10 a.m. with the pole vault and triple jump.
